:-) 30" Monitors are overkill

My Apple 30" just arrived and I hooked it up, overall, it's an overkill.

2560x1600, requires too much head turning. It's better to go 2 x 23" or 24" (1920x1200 in dual monitor setup)

Oh man my eyes where killing me on a ACD 24" 😉

24" is quite the biggie, man I can't imagine using a 30" screen, hehe

My 22" LCD is plenty enough for my workdesk. I can't imagine what it would be with a 30".

I guess one can get used to it, but to sit so close to a screen to see small print. I don't see how but people manage.

I have to now increase my font size to 120% to properly read without squinting.

Someday i want a 30", & there's no way it's gonna be overkill.

I sit with two 20" 16x12 displays in front of me, & i would love to convert them into portrait mode displays alongside a 30" 😛

I have had a Samsung 240T (24", 1920 x 1200) for 4 years now and will be moving to the Dell 30" or comparable (2560 x 1600) probably early next year. I ordered a new Dell Precision workstation for a client and they offered her the 30" for right around $1100. Pretty amazing.
 
No such thing as overkill. I wish they had a higher pixel count 30" display though. I have a 1920x1200 15.1" WUXGA notebook display and the dot pitch is superb. Not that I'm complaining about the 3007 I'm using now. 😉
 
Love my 3007, only problem is I'm going to need two of those 8800's in SLI to run games at 2560x1600 maxed out.. F.E.A.R. needs a lot of the settings turned down to get a decent frame rate at 2560x1600 res with 7800gts in SLI
 
If you're talking about working at normal eye distances for a computer, i.e. maybe 30 inches or so (I lean back in my chair), then yeah, I think 30" is getting toward too big. Large panels aren't meant to be viewed close up. Even when you run them at high enough resolution that you don't experience any coarseness (as I would if I sat 30 inches from, say, my 37" Sceptre at 1920 x 1080), I think you're just doing too much panning at that point. I want to be able to "take in" the entire desktop without moving my head, but probably people who are used to multiple monitors don't feel that way.

You know, if the head turning bothers you so much I could trade with you. My 19" NEC doesn't need ANY neck turning, and it's a lot smaller too 😉 Don't need as big a desk and more room for other stuff to pile up 😛
 
I'll make a better offer. I'll trade you my 17" LCD. Not head turning ever. I can see the whole thing 1 foot away with one eye closed.

But the text is bigger on my 19" than on your 17" so he won't have to squint, HA!

EDIT: Crap, just realized it wasn't the OP who needed to make text 120% 🙁
