3 year old + computer?

My little cousin who's 3, is able to get around Nickjr.com and choose her own games and videos.
How often should she be allowed to be at the computer?
Should we buy a special type of mouse or mousepad? Keyboard?

My kids all had their own keyboard to type on whe n they were about a year old. The kid would see daddy typing and want to come up and press keys, etc. I had a dead keyboard at work that I brought home, removed the cable to avoid choking, and thrn gave to the kids. They loved pressing the keys and typing like daddy....

She shouldn't be allowed on a computer at such an early age. It'll run her for life...pretty soon she'll be neffing like the best of us.

kids who spend a lot of time on computers actually score lower in mathematics than kids who have a limited exposure to computers.
How computers make our kids stupid

"For all the schools and parents who have together invested billions to give children a learning edge through the latest computer technology, a mammoth new study by German researchers brings some sobering news: Too much exposure to computers might spell trouble for the developing mind.
From a sample of 175,000 15-year-old students in 31 countries, researchers at the University of Munich announced in November that performance in math and reading had suffered significantly among students who have more than one computer at home. And while students seemed to benefit from limited use of computers at school, those who used them several times per week at school saw their academic performance decline significantly as well."

let her use it all she wants

I would guess that's true unless using it impacts her social skills and physical activity.

IMO kids shouldn't use a computer until they actually know how electricity works. Remember, hands away from electrical outlets and do not poke finger into PSU fan!

My little sister is 4 and she uses the computer just fine. She can walk up to the computer, hit start, and find her games and open up the one she wants. Without anyone helping her. Then she can play it just fine too.

When I have kids, I'm severely limiting their computer use until they're much older. At that age, they should be reading books, etc. The computer is only a tool for learning after a certain point, IMO.

Same here.

I was more concerned for the effect it would have on her hands or wrists.

Right now she spends anywhere from 30min to 1 hour 3 days a week and she loves it because she can choose her own games and videos.

And I'm not worried about the keyboard or mouse, she's not the destructive type!

I think that my kids are the exceptions then. My daughter (8yo) "plays" on the pc a fair amount (~5-7 hours a week) and she just got a perfect score on her math section for the gifted program at her school (99th percentile). Her sister (9yo) is also in the gifted program and is just as active on the pc.

My son, who is 2 1/2, can already open/close windows by himself and loves to do puzzles on Thomas the Train's website and also plays with some astronomy software we bought (part of a software suite for his older sisters). He is able to recite/recognize all alphabet letters and also is able to count to 20. He is also able to count objects to get to the correct amount, do addition of his 1's (1+1=, 1+2=, etc.) and has learned geometric shapes.

I think that the pc is a great tool if it used utilized in a proper manner. As with anything else, each individual child is different and has different aptitudes/capabilities and needs to have their learning structured in a way that will best nurture those abilities.

I think that's a good amount of time. I wouldn't allow her to spend any more time than that on it, but a maximum of three hours a week doesn't seem bad.

Educational games can be a help to younger kids, develope reading skills, math skills, suitable for a 3 year old. Given their attention at that age, she/he won't be on it for hours and hours at a time, it will be spuradic at best.
