Hi all, I have this strange problem with windows XP networking, accompanied by a diagram:http://img296.echo.cx/img296/4256/networkingproblem3ny.gif

I ran the "Set up a home or office network" tool on each computer, and put them all in the same workgroup.

Here's the deal, under view workgroup computers:
Computer 1 can see computers 1 and 2.
Computer 2 can see computers 1 and 2.
Computer 3 can see only computer 3 (itself).

Computer 3 is not a hardwire connection like the other two, as you can see it is connecting via the wireless hub that is plugged into the router. Anyone know how to solve this problem? Thanks.

Welcome to AT Network Forum.

Internet Yes, Sharing No, is a common problem that befuddles many entry level usres.

Log to this page it has a lot of links to instructions to Windows Network Settings, and Sharing.

You need to check and see that the ip addresses are different on every machine, and you need to check that they all have different names on the network.

Thanks for the quick reply. However, I still have a problem...this is what I did:

Reset all the TCP/IP on all computers.
Reinstall the network on all computers.

Using the command hostname, I found all computers are named differently, as they should be.

Using the command ipconfig, I found that:
Computer 1 is 192.168.1.100 using gateway 192.168.1.1
Computer 2 is 192.168.1.102 using gateway 192.168.1.1
Computer 3 is 192.168.2.3 using gateway 192.168.2.1

Any suggestions? Thanks.

It seems that your Wireless Hub (I assume it is an Access Point plugged to a Wired Router) is configured with the wrong IP range and its DHCP is On.

Change the AP's IP to be of the same IP range as the Router (Example give it an IP of 192.168.1.200) and switch Off the AP's DHCP so that the Wireless computer would be on the same Network as the other computers and would obtain its IP fro the Router.

Thanks for the reply. However, I do not know where I change the AP's settings - please let me know :)

EDIT: My router IP is 192.168.1.1, and it's DCHP range is .1.100 to .1.149...I don't know if this helps or not.

With computer 3. Type 192.168.2.1 to login to the AP. Then try to turn on Acces Point mode only, or turn DHCP off.

Hope this helps ^_~

I'm completely screwed up now. I did what you said, Mark, and all was working fine after I turned off DHCP. Then I tried to change the AP's IP to the same IP range as the Router, but it would not accept anything like 192.168.1.x, so I set it to something arbitrary like .3.1. Then the entire thing stopped working. I reset the wireless hub...no difference. Tried using the repair connectivity thing, and it got stuck on "Renewing IP Address" and said it could not fix the problem. Now computer 3 can't even access the internet, the AP, or my router, much less other computers. The Computers 1 and 2 remain fine and visible to each other. Help please!!!

Hmm... trying to think now. try ipconfig again see if Computer 3 can actually connect to the wireless bridge now. It possibly won't because it doesn't get an ip address. Try setting up an ip address manually if it can see the AP on Computer 3.

One thing i must ask, as my friend has had a VERY similiar problem with wireless clients. Do you run with windows firewall on, or do run Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm, ICE, etc, software firewalls? If so there is most likely the cause of the computers not seeing each other.

If u can connect to the AP again, go ahead and re-enable DHCP, try a different IP range, or see if there is a setting similiar to the router that allows its ip to be dynamically assigned from the network. That would free up the problem your having with the broken ip.

Trying to help ^^b

None of these firewalls are running. when I click IP Config, it says Media State Disabled (or media disabled), says ip is 0.0.0.0, etc. Aaaah!
