How do we know that's the 'ultimate setup'? I don't see it compared to three 6970's/6970 + 6990 anywhere. According to Hardocp they tested with settings that were not memory limited, and the AMD setup was faster, cheaper, and less power hungry. Of course that was a lower resolution. I would certainly like to see 30" monitors used in a review from a decent hardware site.

And when you failed to mention that those scores are with the GPU's at over 1GHz (more than a 30% overclock) That's fairly misleading, don't you think?

Hardcop was wrong and did the test over. Tri sli IS the Ultimate setup.

We can't conclude that until we see 2x HD6990 vs. GTX580 Tri-SLI. Both setups cost about the same. Also, you need a highly overclocked SB processor for GTX580 Tri-SLI to shine. So it's only better than HD6990+6970 when paired with the fastest CPU.

I said that in post #3. :)

I find it a bit ironic that Kyle ripped apart GTX480 when it first came out given the noise levels, but HD6990 is an even louder videocard. Quote from that review: "It’s simply not possible to do worse than the 6990 without overvolting/overclocking, it seems."

In this HD6990 CF review, starting at the 30 min mark, the reviewer basically discusses how the cards overheat on "Auto" fan speeds. As a result, he was required to run them at 80% fan speed to pass Unigine. At 80% fan speed, the 6990 is unbearably loud.

So unless you are watercooling or playing with headphones, having a 6990 in your rig is pretty much out of the question for most of us.

LOLOL... i love how it goes red then green.. then back to red.. then green... all in the same generation, because testers like to rush things.. :D

mmm.. or a gulftown clocked high on a X58.. ():)
+/- 200mhz of my clock should be doable.

however why are u pitting 6990's with 580gtx? yeah they cost almost the same.. however the 6990 is a 590GTX counterpart.

That's a good point. Although GTX590 is OOS on Newegg. It would be interesting to see HD6990 CF vs. GTX590 SLI vs. GTX580 Tri-Fire.

Based on some benches I have seen of HD6990 CF and GTX590 SLI, it's a mixed bag. So in general both of those setups seem to scale poorly.
