Its all on the line for Bob Bennett, the long term GOP Senator from Utah. Utah primary laws are described as quirky, but Bennett ran against 7 other GOP rivals and came in third place.
And now is trying to crawl into second place through the back door. Allowing him a tiny chance to get in a two man runoff primary in June. Failing that, this Saturday will see him fail to win the GOP nomination.

Bob's sin, he was too liberal in a super conservative State, and in the name of party purity he becomes expendable.

Off course the GOP danger, if it fields candidates too far to the right, is that the GOP may find itself too far right to be electable in many states. And like the groundhog, it is not hard to predict 24 months more of gridlock.

That happens. Wellstone said the same thing. One term, and was working on his 3rd before his plane crashed in 2002.

Bennett's age of 76 is not helping him either, but I wonder if some entity will count the # of House and Senate seats the GOP loses by running too far to the right in Nov/2010.

IMO At the local level it will not matter much in 2010. Utah will vote republican. So unless he goes 3rd party and the Dem pulls out the Rep will win.
BUT in 2012 if a lot of these far righties make to much of a mess and are vocal about it then look for a backlash and for Obama/Dems to make hard gains at a national level.

Stop being the partisan hack you are. Look at Illinois which the Republican primary picked one of the most moderate candidates in the field.

Then look at your Democratic Party, like how they want to overthrow Blanch Lincoln in the Arkansas primary. Outside "progressives" have been pouring money in to that state to get the "progressive" candidate on the ballot instead of the moderate Democrat.

Take the partisan hat off once in a while.
