I'm wondering... what is the fastest "off the shelf" computer that can kick out a Work Unit? I suppose RAM matters... What else is a factor for seti besides the CPU?

Thanks, Just wondering how some people can get it down to less then 1 hour... Maybe some sort of dual cpu? Or would a 2 Gig do that in less then hour?

GoddessBelldandy,

Here is a link to a different Seti Download page which includes a command-line version of Seti for OS X. You should be able to run two instances of this to take advantage of both of your processors. I know virtually nothing about OS X but if it is anything like Linux, you have to have each instance of the client running in their own directory.

If you have any trouble with the setup, stop by the Distributed Computing forum and ask for some help.

Actually, stop by anyway and say hello! :)

BTW, your rig should be able to crunch a lot of Work Units a day! :Q

ericlp,

One of the fastest processors for Seti is the Athlon XP. An XP 2000+ does an average WU in about 3 hours. The Pentium 4 Northwood 2.2ghz comes in at about the same time. I believe the Mac G4's are also quick.

The amount of Ram is not so important as the speed it is running at. FSB speed makes a big difference to Seti, as does the size of the L2 cache. I'm not 100% sure, but I think some of the really fast averages can be had by those lucky few users who have access to ultra-fast servers with processors that have large amounts of L2 cache. I seem to recall that earlier versions of Seti ran very well on Alpha processors but the latest client is fairly doggy now on that platform.

Are you on the TeAm? If not, you should drop by the distributed computing forum and say hello. It's a friendly group of people and they'll answer all your questions and help you get set up and crunching Work Units to defeat the dastardly DSLR!

Go TeAm!

to neovan, sduguid:
thanks for the tip, i have finished reading the seti os x section, will install it to the g4 server when i move back to dorm the coming weekend, right now, my ibook will have to take up to task. Too bad the DDR-Ram is so expensive now, my AthlonXP 2000+ from the AMD drawing (Santa Clara) has no use yet... let see if i could persuade all my suitemates to load the client to their machines.

to Shinj1EVA:
"YOU GOT THAT RIGHT" ^_^

OK I got a serious question. I loaded SETI@HOME on both of my roommates computers, but they can't connect for some reason. the SETI driver icon is a red upside down satellite dish. I click transmit and it doesn't work. I tried entering a proxy server, still doesn't work. Anyone know why?

What is your desired cache size set to? If it is 0 try setting it to 10 and clicking save config then click the transmit button.

I had about 750 wu on my old @home email address and wanted to give them to the team but for the life of me I tried every password I could think of and they didn't work. So I signed up for a new account and behold it didn't ask for a password. That's why I can't figure it out I never had seti email it to me. Anyone have any ideas how I could get an email to to my old @home email account to get the password so I can give these wu's to the team? I read here a lot and have gotten many great deals and just wanted to help out. I have started a new account and signed up to help out at the new email address but It only has about 20 wu's. Any ideas how to get those 750 wu's over to team anandtech?

Forgot to add I LOST my email address, the 750 wu's and the chance to get the password when AT&T@home switched over to ATTBI.com.

While Seti is a fine and honorable distributed computing project, there is another project of equal (possibly more in the eyes of those of us who have lost family and friends to cancer) importance called the UD Cancer research project. The Department of Chemistry at the University of Oxford in England and the National Foundation for Cancer Research are running this. According to the client, the program is a computer-aided drug design program that models interaction between potential drug molecules and a target protien that is involved in the growth of cancer.
Mind you finding alien life is good too, so if you wish, you can run the UD client along with Seti, or other distributed computing clients.
Please do take the time to sign up for UD, the life you save may be that of a loved one or even yours...

Did you check the box.........display transmit?
then save config?
a black box should pop up and give you two options. If your just starting answer the few questions it asks!

biggyz! Thats a bummer!!!

Welcome to everyone who has joined the race!

Freejack2, I couldn't agree more. Once this race is over I am gonna put UD on at least one box!

Bump for more members and more power!

Get started fast and easy!

yea i did everything right.. it's just like it is on my athlon xp and my duron machines, but for some reason my roommates are unable to connect. they can go online.. were' nto behind a firewall.. don't need a proxy.. every computer has their own IP address.. I dunno.. i guess if worse comes to worse i can ahve them do one work unit at a time w/out the seti driver and install firedaemon to run it as a service.. dunno.

personally, I like SetiHide best as a companion program to Seti.
You just put it in the same directory as Seti and run it once.
It gives you options to start Seti with windows, and either show as a system tray icon, or not at all.
I leave it in the tray so it can log all the times to process wu's.
Then I can check on it every now and again to see my total WU number,
or stop the Seti client if i am doing something particularly intensive.

I considered swithing to the Cancer program, but I am concerned about the fact that it is trying out drug combinations..
pharmaceutical research..... Are they gonna make the drug cheaper because of all the "FREE" research help??
I don't think so...
I think it's a good program, i just distrust corporate drug companies.

HI, I have 2260 WUs done but I can't remember my password
and the email I had when I first signed up is no longer valid.
The isp was JPS.net. If somehow someone could get the password
or change the email address I would gladly join the Anandtech Team.

Thanks,

John

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Oxford in England and the National Foundation for Cancer Research are running this.
Neither is a profit mongering drug company. As near as I can tell if this does find a cure these two organizations will handle it which will probably mean a very affordable price for the cure.
Even if it was a profit mongering drug company this could at least result in a cure. If my wife was diagnosed with cancer I would pay anything for a cure. Fortunately this is at least being run by a couple of organizations dedicated to a cure.

*BUMP*

Got it to work. So now i have five computers crunching WUs maybe i can add more computers by the end of next week.

Currently:
Athlon 1.4ghz 512MB PC2100 DDR
Athlon 1.4ghz 256MB PC133 SDR
Pentium4 1.5ghz 512MB PC133 SDR
Duron 1.0 ghz 256MB PC1600 DDR
Pentium3 800mhz 512MB PC133 SDR

I can add a Athlon 1.0ghz w/ 512MB PC150 SDR
and a AMD K6-2 400mhz w/ 192MB PC100

Where's the stats site to find out all the info about which teams/corporations we're next to and aiming to pass ;)
I only found sites for members inside of Anandtech and the linked DSLR/Anandtech race stats.
