3 sticks of 256mb or 2x256mb+1 512mb?

Looking to upgrade memory on my current mobo. it supports 3 memory dimms i have two slots filled with 256mb each. was wondering if i should just add 1 more 256mb for a total of 768mb.or should i just add a stick of 512mb to the third slot to equal 1 gig. which one will help or hinder performace.thanks in advance
 
is that an nforce2 board ?

if so then i guess the more memory the better
but the difference in performance between 256mb more when you got that much memory should be small anyways

if you had an i875 board then you would have to install all the same kind to use dual channel mode but i don't think the nforce2 or nforce1 cares what the 3rd dimm is
the manual should tell you
