3 Poor handset choices for ATT->T-Mobile change

Nevermind. Apparently I was unclear about wanting to discuss the handsets in question, and not carrier choice.

Why would you want to move to Verizon Wireless but in the interim move to T-mobile? Your post is just a bunch of rambling and it's hard to know what the question is. If you want to switch to VZW because you have crappy signal quality, consider changing to a handset like a Samsung Galaxy S4. My dad moved off of an iPhone 4 and my Mom moved off of a Motorola Razr and ever since then, they've been able to make cellular phone calls in the house with excellent reception. Handset quality for reception is far more important than you'd think. Also fiddling with radio settings like disabling LTE in areas with poor LTE signal can mean the difference between no internet and browsing the web swimmingly... (Though disabling LTE won't affect call quality since phone calls are always routed through the 3/4g network)

If you just want to be on tmobile for a little while in the interim you could use your existing att phones just as long as unlocked.

If I were you I'd just use aio wireless or something instead of att since its on the same network and will have the same reception. . the. Switch to verizon

Anyone considering Verizon instead of T-Mobile I would assume is disappointed in T-Mobile coverage in their area (otherwise why go to Verizon?). This will only lead to frustration down the road. And hopping between carriers should not be taken so lightly, especially when there are a ton of hidden fees from Verizon and AT&T every time you sign up for service (trust me, I learned the hard way).

If you want to test whether T-Mobile service would be good enough for you, do that on a separate phone with a separate account and a separate number. You don't want to be in the position of needing to re-sign up for AT&T or immediately switching to Verizon because you realize T-Mo coverage isn't good enough for you (and again, if it is good enough, why are you switching to Verizon?) 😵

I have the Lumia 521. It's a perfectly nice device. Obviously not as fast as an iPhone 5, but better than any cheap android outside a Moto G. I also happen to personally really like the design of windows phone, and like it more than Android or iOS. The main thing I would make sure of with your wife is that all the apps she wants are available. The app store is definitely not as developed as the other two systems, and if your wife is a heavy app user it may be a bit of a shock.
