3 pin mb connector from PSU

Are the 3 pin PSU to MB connectors important to connect to the motherboard, from a PSU?

It wouldn't make sense for a PSU to send power to the MB to power the internal PSU fan ... ??? ...

Usually a three pin connector that looks like a normal fan connector is for speed information of the PSU fan. Check if your mobo has a PSU FAN connector and it should go there.

It's somewhere on the board. I remember I had to use every single 3 pin header to connect a fan to + using a 3 pin splitter.

I just never hooked it up. I did check to see if the fan on the PSU spun up without it hooked up and it did but I was curios if it's necessary.

It's not required. I've seen some PSU have that 3-pin connector, but only have the yellow wire actually in place. Just sends out a timing signal for the motherboard to sense the fan rotational speed.
