3 or 4 graphics processors after the Voodoo 1 you think were "high water marks"?

Vooodo2, R300, G80.

I didnt own an R300 but it was a massive step forward in performance. Voodoo2 was my first 3d GPU. Blew my mind. G80 was a great processor with a longevity unseen in GPU at that time.

Rendition Verite, it was during the time of Voodoo 1.. but the major thing that made it awesome, it had built in hardware RISC based antialiasing AND AF. Think about that, during Voodoo 1, you had a card that produced stunning images. It made a big difference playing GL Quake, everything was just so crisp compared to V1 (I owned both at the time).

Nothing matched it for image quality until many years later.

Maxwell wont be a new high-water mark because not all of them will have ARM processors.

Why would a theoretical ARM CPU make or break it in that regard?

I guess "everything" has to have an ARM processor in it nowadays. It's like the 80's and clocks. Heck you even have AMD looking to put ARM CPU's into X86 CPU's.

I just noticed who posted that, not to poke fun at him, but he tends to over focus on weird stuff to his detriment. To him it probably is a ground breaking feature and Nvidia not putting it on all of their chips (though I admit I didn't know they putting it on any) with Maxwell is probably really disappointing.

Really? Wow. I am impressed. This must mean you have access to the most top secret Nvidia information.

I really dont know how they plan on integrating ARM or what all it could be possibly used for. But just because i dont know, I couldnt possibly claim it would serve no purpose. But then again I guess I dont have access to the specific design schematics and planned implementation of the entire process. Even if i seen this information, i doubt that i could fully comprehend the full system and the impact it might or might not have on performance.

But i envy you.
Not only have you seen this information, you completely reverse engineered it and concluded it completely useless, that it has no purpose at all. Your superior knowledge would mean your not just a processor design engineer but one with unsurpassed skills. Am i right?

I mean, It sounds a little nuts for Nvidia engineers to waste die space and all on adding an entire CPU to their chips that will serve no purpose at all.

all joking aside, I agree with you on the "maxwell isnt getting arm" statement. I really dont think it will. At least the gm204 most likely wont.

ATi 9700 pro. Bought this exclusively for Doom 3 release (oh baby)

You and me both brother. My 9700 Pro ran Doom 3 like a breeze. I know a lot of folks didn't think it lived up to expectations but I loved that game. Some of the best sound design I've heard. Loved that card. Used it for Half Life 2 as well.

The 8800 GTX and GT were absolute champions too.

They have two things going in the future a ARM/X86 compatible platform that could lead to true ARM/X86 compatible CPU. But they also outline putting a very simple ARM chip (cortez a5) for security purposes (encryption I think) on the chips. In this case obviously not directly programmable through the OS. But still random ARM core added on like a clock.

Edit: Also some simple google-fu does show rumors randomly popping up since 2011 that Maxwell would have ARM CPU included (Doubtfully in silicon but onboard). Including an article from April this year that I noticed after seeing it, that I had read it when it was originally posted. Doesn't mean it will, but it seems to be a persistent rumor.

9700 pro, 8800gtx, and hd5870

The 5870 would still be a great mid range GPU if it had more vram almost 5 years later.

I can't decide between 5870 and 5850. On the one hand, the 5870 is still a viable gaming GPU now, overclocked well. But the 5850 was so reasonably priced for its performance, overclocked like a beast, and still works great today.

Got a buddy still running his i5 750 @ 4 and 5850 @ 950 (iirc) to this day. Can't run everything at max but he can play anything still.

actually it wouldnt🙂 dynamic parallelism, hyper-q, and double precision can take a ton of workload off the CPU
