I was fooling around with my friend's laptop and noticed there were at least 5 access points (I saw more every so often) and most of them were wide open.

I had net access but I didn't check to see if they had file sharing on or anything. LOL

It's mighty tempting to cancel my $52/mo net access when people are so foolish.

Of course you could just boot up P2P and saturate their bandwidth to high heaven.

They don't know or care about network security? For the vast majority of people, they don't have anything top secret or super important on their PC. What are you gonna do, read their Word documents? Crash their PC so they can't play the Sims Online?

So if someone left a car running unattended, you'd be a prick and drive it off instead of just letting it be?

The name of my wireless network is "Open as long as it's not abused". I hope people get the idea. I haven't had any problems so far.

No, I definitely am not going to do any malicious activity.

Maybe some are just leaving it open and don't care? Why am I paying $52/mo for access again?

I know several people in apartments, townhomes and condos that share just for the hell of it.

mine looks wide open but i got mac filtering on.

so ppl try to connect and it wont let it. I know if someone wanted to get on with mine he has to clone my mac id or something but then he can go for all the ones that have wep encryption, that's easier to hack. a neighbour of mine wanted to use mine, so i let him access it. I did it after some kid started to majorly use bt that couldnt surf.

And I take ethereal and look at all traffic to that AP and all of a sudden, I have your mac address. It's way easier than wep and takes zero time.

I am moving into an apartment in a 12-story highrise next week, with an identical building next door. I can't wait to see how many open wireless networks I can find.
