Say I got travelocity and after a few months, say 4 months i decided to cancel, do i get to keep the DSL modem? And would this modem only work for SDSL? Hate to ask a lot of questions but I know Telocity has a faster upload about 300 verse MSN 128 but MSN is 1.5 down and travelocity is 700 down. What would be better for online gaming? ie Counter-Strike?

Anything having to do with Telocity is NO DEAL. As an ex-Telocity user, I can assure you of the following:

1. You will wait at least 4-6 weeks for scheduled installation, at least.
2. The installers will miss at least one appointment without calling first.
3. Installation will be further delayed because it's the "phone company's fault"
4. When you finally get installation, it won't be at the speeds you ordered
5. You will wait on hold for at least 1.5 hours each time you call, and often you will be randomly disconnected. Did I say randomly? I meant after at least 1 hour of hold time.
6. And finally, when you cancel the service (which is a 2 hour hold time), they will keep charging your card each month until you cancel your card or change your card number. I'm still going through the run around on this one for one month of service they charged me for two weeks after I cancelled, and a friend of mine had it happen for 5 months in a row before he finally changed his card number like I told him to. Oh, and they will try to charge you for the modem that they won't give you return authorization for.
7. So, no offense to the poster who didn't know better, but Telocity is NO DEAL. Of course, your experience may be different than mine and the only two other people I know who had Telocity.

I have to agree with Chexi, Telo$#ity is not a good deal... I cancelled their service before I was switched and they still charged me... I called Billing dept who decided that hanging up on me would be nice... :disgust:
Now disputing that charge...
This is not mentioning that their support is also non-existent and it takes them months to do anything. They have a large log of bad reviews at DSLreports... they're supposed to be absorbing the majority of "refugees" from the dead Northpoint ISP partners.
They couldn't handle capacity then, nor now... friggin dialup is better.
If you have cable access in your area, plz... in the name of all that's holy, don't subscribe to this horrible company.

I gotta agree with everyone who says that Telocity sucks ass. I have had it for a couple months here in San Diego, and the entire network goes down at least once a week for extended periods of time. Also, the connection is randomly reset about every couple hours - sucks that i have to always be resuming downloads. Their newsgroup server is pretty piss poor as well.

Cable's the way to go!

I don't think the Speedstream will work with Telocity. I had the stupid USB modem from Winfire for about a week on the $34.95 plan (1.5Mps/128k). I couldn't play Starcraft with it, nor could I get a reliable connection. The damn service stopped every 5-7 minutes so I called in to cancel their service. That was over a month ago and they still have not release my phone line so now I'm stuck without any DSL service. No other DSL provider, including Telocity, could sign me up because my line was still listed as active with Winfire. I ended up getting cable modem from Charter. I called Charter on Friday and they sent out a tech that Sunday. Now I'm up and running at about 800K-1Mps so I'm pretty happy. With DSL, since I was 11,500 ft away from the closest CO, the best I could get was 768K service anyway.

this maybe off topic somewhat, but might help some of those people still tied up with winfire dsl. i recently got a letter from rhythms-parent company of winfire, and telocity. it says that my dsl line with winfire is about to be disconnected.and they both have teamed up to give current winfire customers some kinda deal. and that i have until april 1, 2001 to sign up with telocity and gives certain incentives to sign up. so if i act now i can migrate my dsl line which is already hot to telocity they say without it being disconnected and them me ordering a new line. hope this helps some of you. but i am not sure what to do. do i sign up with them or not. too many horror stories about telocity and rhythms.

After checking out real.com site, I called Telocity to discuss this deal. Wanted to know if I signed up for real.com services, would I get credited for 3 months. Told I needed some kind of promotion code from real.com.

Tomorrow, I will call real.com and find out what service they require of me to buy. Honestly, it looks like one don't have to be a new customer to get the three free months of telocity, just pay for real.com services.

Oh, I posted this deal over on http://www.dslreports.com/.

Telocity gateways (the modem) are proprietary. if you cancel they will need to be returned. i don't play games, but articles i have read have mentioned tha SDSL would be preferable for them, as it has an inherantly lower latency. I have also seen articles which say that SDSL supports a greater speed at a farther distance than ADSL. When considering 1.5/128 ADSL versus 800/800 SDSL another thing to consider is that it's even somewhat uncommon to download at a full 800kbs; many servers can't even give data to you that fast. Finally, MSN doesn't compare particularly favorable to Telocity. Both provider's customer satisfaction tend to vary greatly; if you're in a good market you can get excellent happy heavenly service; if you're in some other market you'll be one of the people who refer to the isp as teloshitty.

read the reviews, but pay attention to where they are from. also keep in mind that telocity's service has improved a lot in recent months now that they've been able to absorb to some degree the glut of customers inheritred from their acquisitions of other companies (or other companies bankruptcies).
