That's my experience with them too.

I don't think they even last as long as the cheap incandescent bulbs yet they cost an awful lot more.

I'm planning on buying a few hundred incandescent bulbs and storing in my garage before this ban hits.

You fail at seeing that Congress while not specifically banning incadecent light bulbs, effectively banned them by making them not fit into new regulations for efficiency. It 's typical political manuevering. Don't ban something because bans are bad, just make it impossible or financially impractical to do something and the "problem" will work itself out.

I'm not sure about wind turbines, but most solar technology comes from the United States. It's a closely related to the semiconductor industry.

However, there is a difference between where the technology comes from and where it is used.

Oh and congress did NOT phase out production of incandescent bulbs. All the bill did was require a set efficiency. Other bulbs like halogen can also meet those specs.

And light bulb factories were shutting down well before this bill. But hey why let a little thing like facts get in the way.

That's why we need to push high efficiency LED based light bulbs. We currently make the majority of these LEDs. Also, the frequency spectrum can be tweeked to mimic incandescents and just about any lighting sceme you can think of. They are still so damn spendy though so far.

Actually the vast majority of high-brightness LEDs in the products I deal with are manufactured in China. It's considered a big deal to assemble them (mount the LEDs on boards with the drivers) in this country, but we make damned few of the LEDs here. And the vast majority of LEDs used in lighting are "white" LEDs, which are simply blue LEDs coated with phosphors just like fluorescent lamps. Cree does make some modules that consist of a red LED and a yellow-green LED; the color isn't any better than white LEDs, but their driver allows them to measure spectrum and keep the light balanced over the life of the LED. And of course if you have a large enough wallet you can mix red, green and blue LEDs for excellent light. But considering that a site lighting fixture might cost $200 in metal halide and $2,000 in LED there isn't a lot of interest in general purpose RGB LED lighting right now.
