3 Hippies and a Green Bus

The guy in this story REALLY deserves some good karma...

EDIT: I'm now taking donations. The 3 hippies are down to their last $180 and still have to drive back to IL. If anybody wants to help these guys out, or are in the LA area and want to come give a hand, PM me. My PayPal account takes credit cards and I have a PayPal debit card so the $$ is instantly available.

These guys got in WAY over their heads, but they really don't want to give up. Can't say I blame 'em since busses rock. 😉

UPDATE 9/15: Well, now that we've identified the actual problems, it's just a matter of buying parts. A couple of folks on The Samba have offered to overnight the parts, but the hippies don't want to wait. (I don't understand this, but whatever.)

We've gathered several hundred in donations, so there's a chance they'll make it back to IL assuming the bus holds together. No food money though. Still hoping to get them some more $$. We'll see...

UPDATE 9/16: (Ok, it's 9/17, but I was too tired last night to update.)
They're on the way home! Bus is running decent, and appears to be quite driveable. They hooked up with me on the way out of town and collected the $350 in donations I've been gathering. I got some pics and video as well.

I'm hoping they make it home ok. I think so...

Yesterday they told me that when they got to the storage facility where the bus was waiting for them, they found a heroin tie off ( how'd they know what that looks like...?) and dirty womens panties in the bus. Skid marks. Yuck!

Ok, there have been some big updates. I'm heading out to LA to see what small assistance I can provide as soon as bottomend calls me. If nothing else, having another person to share the burden with should help...

I guess I just don't have teh VW blood in me, but, that guy went way overboard helping them. The bus ticket suggestion, and maybe a fraud investigation on the seller would have been my helpful advice. Still, it's cool that someone would do so much to help folks out like that. What's wrong is that they are financially irresponsible folks who'll just do the same thing again. But, I haven't heard from the hippies so I could be wrong about that part.

 
dman, you're right. I agree, in fact I was the one suggesting the bus tickets...

However, being a Bus owner myself, I can't just leave 'em hanging.

bottomend has done more for these guys than anyone could ask for. It's as much for him as for the hippies that I'm going out there today and trying to get some funds to the guys. bottomend really needs to get past this...
 
So, the top priority is the brakes. I traced the line from the booster in the front of the bus to the rear. Everything looks connected well enough though. I checked the one way valve and it worked fine. Any idea?
Sometimes the rubber brake lines in VW's collapse internally keeping the brake fluid from moving through them. You can stomp the hell out of the pedal and still not much of anything will happen. If everything else looks OK, this would be my guess as to whats happening.

Well, there's a chance we've found the problem. The alternator that was in the car was only putting out 4amps. Not enough to keep the fuel injection running, let alone FI and spark. So it was draining batteries. They swapped in an unknown used alt and couldn't get it to start at all.

I recommended a new/rebuilt alt. I'd be willing to bet that gets 'em running again...

We're still taking donations. An alt will be AT LEAST $100 from a shop...
