Wow, got charged $2.50 for a "Healthcare Surcharge" tax at a restaurant in SF this weekend. Fuck that shit, last time I ever go into that godforsaken city.

Fucking money grubbing bastards. $6.00 toll to get across the GG bridge, $20 for parking, and now you fuckers want to charge me a 3% tax to give healthcare to the fucking legion of useless bums in your city? Go fuck yourself SF.

Get used to it, part of the priviledge of living here.

Or you can leave not just San Fran but the country.

Ya that too, I was avoiding treading into the social class issues though.

Just one of the benifits of SF being surrounded by water on 3 sides... it's a lot easier to keep the riff raff out and property values up.

EDIT: just realized this thread got moved to P&N

/bails

You obviously haven't walked(make it run) thru the Tenderloin District.

Yes, providing healthcare for your employees is madness... Who would want to pay 3% to make sure that the person cooking and serving their food is healthy?

The law already requires your cook/server to be in good health - but good try

Hey, I'll opt out right now. Just give me what was taken from me and I'm good.

Heck yeah! I'd take that option in a second

I don't think I can make statements as ridiculous as yours though. You cannot guarantee anything, but you can increase chances that people get care they need by having them covered. At least when they are sick they are able to go see a doctor early instead of hoping it goes away by itself.
I knew your reply would contain the word "hope".

You're making a ton of assumptions. You'd be better off saying that you support this with every fiber of your being because you feel it's the right thing to do instead of coming up with rationalizations such as this.

I don't much care because I live a long ways from SF. I have no intention of going there so the burden will never fall on me. They can tax taking a dump or salad tossing for all I care.

It's a statistical calculation.
I am willing to pay a little more to reduce (even if not to zero) my chances of getting sick because food service employee cannot afford to see a doctor and keeps going to work sick. I definitely support with every fiber of my being paying 3% more for food in exchange for a lower risk of getting explosive diarrhea.

If you bought a new video card from Nvidia and there was a slip inside the box that showed the portion of the sales price that went to employee health benefits would you still bitch about paying for other people's health care?

Or is it that you think that restaurant workers specifically should not have any health benefits?

Pay up or GTFO.

Besides the issue of the extra 4% tax, who is to say that the money actually went to improve health care for the employees ? Taxes and fees rarely go to pay for what they are intended.

I would just avoid patronizing restaurants that put this surcharge in their bill. The surcharge only applies to businesses that do not provide even minimum health care coverage for their employees, and I have no interest in supporting those establishments.

Here's an idea for people in SF that don't want to deal with this: VOTE NANCY PELOSI THE FUCK OUT OF OFFICE. Then you won't have to deal with bullshit legislation being passed. Seriously, nobody thought that business' increased healthcare costs wouldn't end up coming from the consumers?

Nancy Pelosi is a Congreswoman. She doesn't set city policies. They offer an extra benefit and charge for it. Some support that.
