Why does this happen in the USA so much more often than other civilized countries? This is an honest question.

I believe a lot of countries in Europe don't even let the civilians have guns. Or at least they're super-controlling to make everything safe.

I personally think it's because Americans are generally spoiled compared to the rest of the western world and don't know how to handle rejection. This sort of thing rarely happened in this country 50 years ago. We've always had firearms everywhere in the US, it's not like guns are a new thing. These retaliatory shootings by loners and outcasts is a relatively new occurrence though.

Certain cultural proclivities combined with access to weapons and restricted options for alternative outlets. It's a violent culture, a self-centered culture, an impatient culture. Mental/emotional problems are stigmatized, and treatment for them is difficult to obtain in many cases.

Ugh, why won't they make guns illegal already! Then there would be no shootings like this!

Umm....NO. Guns are definitely less prevalent in European countries, but the tendency towards violence is much more of a problem in the US, armed or otherwise. Hell, every Swiss male is armed, and you very very rarely here about a Swiss individual going on a rampage.

assuming governments in Europe are super controlling is completely fatuous. I'd hazard a guess that you have no experience in the matter?

Yikes, a bio professor here at Rice was recently denied tenure. It's agonizing and tough, and full of politics and backstabbing. I can see someone who was mentally unstable going off the deep end and losing control.

Please, please don't turn this into another gun control thread.
