Hi !
I am thinking of building an Athlon xp system maybe just after christmass and I can't decide for the monitor..
I currently have a V95 Optiquest 19 " monitor and a cheap 15" monitor on my old p1-166..

CHOICES:
1. I give the 19 " to my mother and buy a new one for me. (I want a flat 19" that can do 85 hz@ 1600) ***

1.1. Nec ?
1.2. Viewsonic ?
1.3 LG ?

2. I keep my 19" and buy a 15" LCD for my mom. is this a good idea ?
3. I keep my 19" and buy a 17 " for her. I don't really like this option.. heh... just ignore it ! LOL ;)

Reason for all this ? Mom wants her first computer ! ;) Good monitor is important for her eyes too ....

*** I am saying this because I am planning to do a lot of programming, cad and graphic work on it very soon. AND... play games at 1600 with a future radeon 8500 if new updates and faster drivers are released..

1.3 :D, my uncles shop either sell LG or sony, sony is almost on par with the Trinitrons, i have a 17 inch LG flat that does 1600x1200 @ 75 HZ. not too bad, but i run it at 1280x1024 @ 85HZ. thats just my opinion, and the text is pretty sharp, but i have a crappy geforce2

I have to put a vote in for SONY. I have a older 17" that I can not seem to replace. I have taken various 19" monitors back because they lack the colors, and sharpness of my Sony. Though it is getting old (about 6-7 years) It still has a very good picture, and I hope it doesn't die as I think I have already proven to myself it will be hard to replace.

Yep, the LG 915FT+ 19in .24dp 1600x1200@85Hz [FLAT] looks very nice indeed.
Could anyone else confirm that this monitor is great ?

Thanks.:p

I have the older LG 995E non flat monitor and I love it.
It took a little while to get used to the non flat screen, since I was used to NEC monitors,
but after a few weeks I didn't notice it anymore.
The colors and image are sharp and the price was right.
19" is definately a plus. Especially for web surfing. Hi rez with still large enough text to see without strain.

Just bought it two days ago.
it's very good 1600x1200 85hz , no flicks rock solid.
Before this I bought NEC FE950+ , it's was nice but I couldn't take the grid lines and 1600x1200 75hz, it flicked a lot.
I took it back and exchange to LG 915FT+.
no regret.
LG was about $50 cheaper too.
I'll put LG over NEC and samsung.

I'm in a bit of a pickle too, I've pretty much narrowed it down to SONY-G420S or the LG 915FT+. I've owned a flat screen 17" inch SONY for about 6 years or so and its never once given me any trouble and its been a fantastic monitor to say the least. Anyways, I'm kind of leaning towards SONY, mainly because of past experiences, however, its substantially more expensive than the LG (like $200 CDN). Anyone have any experiece with LG 915FT+? Good? Bad?

You should also consider whether you want a shadow mask display or apertuer grill. I went from a AG display to a SM and noticed a significant difference in image vibrance, with the advantage going to the apertuer grill monitor. I prefer them personally because thy display a brighter more vibrant image than to that of the shadow mask displays.

I've had good experiences with NEC myself.

I picked up a NEC MultiSync FP1350X for $100 above your limit. I know that's probably useless information. But if you can pick up a 21/22 inch monitor of similar quality you'll soon forget the $100 - but the love will go on and on. : )

okay. Could you explain what they do and wich monitor has it or not ?

I checked the LG specifications and I can't find any information but just the "mask" word. Is that it ? Shadow mask ? Wich one is better and why ? What are the tradeoffs ?

Yeah, I know nec monitors look good too... but 21 " is very big and I don't know if I can fit that on my desk... is 21 " really better than a high quality 19 " ?

Does the G420S come with built-in speakers..? If so, do yourself a big favour and get the model without that -- ugh.. I think it's the G410..?

Yep had mine since April ,very good image quality and text etc if you want a non aperture grill type tube,I`m using BNC inputs since on mine it improves the 2D quality, the USB ports all work fine etc it`s one easy monitor to setup.Very good monitor for the price :).

What is grill aperture and shadow mask ?
Plus, what is the advantage to use USB to connect a monitor ?!?!? :p
One more thing, how do these new monitors compare to my V95 from Optiquest ?

Thanks !

Aperture grill tubes have two very fine horizontal wire across screen, this does bother some people, shadow mask don`t have this problem, monitors with USB ports allow you to plug USB devices in like USB mice etc so in effect it gives you extra USB ports for USB devices.

For differences between the two read this info on aperture grill and shadow monitors .

Mem Thanks for the explanation !
Do you see the lines moving on trinitron monitors ? Does it offer REAL greater image quality ?

Ok. Here are my monitor choices:
1. Viewsonic 19in G90f. FLAT 0.25 diag. 1600@77Hz 500$ CAN
2. LG 915FT+ 19in .24dp 1600x1200@85Hz [FLAT] is the .24dp here diag or something else ? 537$ CAN
3. Nec Multisync FE950+ 19in .25dp 1792x1344@65 Hz [FLAT] where 1600@76Hz 556$ CAN

I am now thinking, should I get these high quality monitors or these ones:
4. LG 995FT 19in .24dp 1600x1200@75Hz [FLAT] 470$ CAN
5. Nec Accusync AS95F 19in .25dp 1600x1200@76 Hz [FLAT] 450$ CAN
6. Viewsonic E95 19" .22dp (H) 1600x1200@76Hz 390$ CAN

Flat screen are something I really want. Is 85 Hz@ 1600 really usefull ? I mean, will it hurt my eyes to work at 1600 on these monitors ? Cause on my V95 1600 isn't tolerable. Text becomes a little fuzzy and refresh rate kills the eyes.

LG makes sweet monitors, Samsung makes sweet monitors, and NEC makes awesome monitors...

I have an NEC and a Samsung in my house and I could not be happier with a pair of monitors...

the NEC is an FE700+ Multisync, and the Samsung is a 900IFT Sync-Master.

LG's Flatron line is sweet too though, totally nice monitors..

I recommend any of these brands from personal experiences!!!

If you know where they are like I do you then they might bother you on the other hand aperture grill owners get use to them, all I can really say is go into a store and have a look for yourself, they don`t really move the lines are fixed across screen but very fine and thin.

Aperture grill monitors in general are very good , it`s best you go and have a look with your own eyes since really only you can decide if the lines will bother you and which monitors you will like.

:)
