So I spend an extra $20 a month on my electric bill because I have to open my fridge 4x as often because the OJ/Milk/2-Liter is keeping me from seeing how many eggs/grapes/strawberries are in the fridge through my app. But it sure beats calling the house and asking the spouse/child to get away from their tablet/phone/TV for a second and look!

You shouldn't pack your fridge so full. You aren't getting good air circulation, most likely have massive temperature gradients, and thus your food is spoiling much faster than it otherwise would. Plus, if you really pare down, you'll find you didn't actually need that 7th ketchup bottle in the fridge (or whatever it is you over-collect there).

I just turn the temperature down colder. Also, you haven't seen my fridge if you think I have seven ketchup bottles in there :D

While I agree the fridge doesn't need to be smart, I have a hard time trying to figure out what software upgrades a fridge would need. It can take a photo and send it online. What else will that fridge need to do differently in 10 years from now than that (that doesn't also require a hardware change)?

Not get hacked, not be subject to app vulnerabilities. Plus, I believe this is running Taizen instead of Android. We still using Wireless AC in 10+ years? 10 years ago "B" was the mainstream. IPv6 capability?

There's just too much technology change in the life of a product like this or a car or a TV...

We still use the HP Slate21 Pro that you put up in Hot Deals. Works great for our shared stuff and since it isn't attached to the fridge It didn't cost $5000.

Yup! Plus you can move it to where you're working. I really wish HP hadn't discontinued that line...I gave my Slate 21 to my mom & swapped out to a Slate 17 (battery = portable). There's still some options available though, most notably the Samsung Galaxy 18.4" tablet. Downside is it's $499, which is over double the price of the Slate 21, and doesn't have an HDMI input port if you want to hook up a cable box or something:

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galaxy-Tablet-Wi-Fi-Black/dp/B0167OR4V0

I actually have a different setup in my new kitchen...I did some reconstruction a few months ago & the price of the cabinet I needed was more than a TV, so I ended up putting a 43" Insignia 4K Roku TV there instead, along with one of those $99 Kangaroo Windows 10 computers. Works decent. Not as portable as the Slate obviously, but my kitchen has almost zero counterspace, so it works. #firstworldproblems :p

I also migrated all of my recipes over to OneNote; I like the design a lot better than Evernote these days.

When we re-do the kitchen I'm sure we will look at something different. But the touch capability is so nice. Our kitchen and upstairs living room are basically one room so the Slate21 also serves as our audio player hooked to the stereo. So nice to just touch "play" with dirty hands instead of wrangling up a mouse and clicking around.

Since it is EOL I'm sure it suffers from vulnerabilities I mentioned earlier, but it as a standalone unit can be entirely replaced.

It never ceases to amaze me how much time and effort people will spend on foolish gadgets and needless complexity.

The rule to remember is simple. The more complicated the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain.

Yeah, that's the problem. I got a giant fridge from a local scratch & dent place, it's like 30 cubic feet or something ridiculous, and it's still too small. I'd rather just buy a pair of all-fridges (if I had the space) & save the money. I've seen some people paint their fridges with chalkboard paint so you can write down what food you have inside & what food you need for your shopping list. Mine is so packed a camera would do me no good anyway :D

How many people are you feeding???

I agree, touch is huge. I have a K400 compact, but I loathe touchpads. Thinking about switching over to an MK320 combo with a keyboard cover, but that requires more countertop space to use. Arg!

Not many, but I primarily cook in bulk & use TV dinner trays for my meal plan. Got my family into it too; the containers take up a lot of space! Saves a bunch of money though, plus you can customize the flavors to your preference. It took me awhile to learn how to cook, but thanks to appliances like the Instant Pot & Anova, I can cook better food faster these days

I want to buy a shower curtain with that kind of technology so I can see when I need to restock shampoo and soap.

Yep. You could buy 2-3 'normal' fridges for that price.

my fridge costed 400$ new, so like 11 of them :awe:

btw don't buy a fridge like mine, it sucks. i can't wait till it breaks so i can buy a new one. knowing my luck it will probably last 25 years

Me when I'm at the grocery store making a hard decision about buying a new bottle of soy sauce when I'm 98% certain I bought one last week: "Motherfucker I should have bought that $6000 fridge with the camera so I didn't have to waste this $3!"
My solution to this problem is just to use a checklist on my phone. I might miss things occasionally, but it keeps me from buying duplicates.

Besides the one more thing to break on a refrigerator issue, what about network security, especially if this is web-connected? I don't need my refrigerator turning into a spam server thanks to unpatched security holes.

I mostly want cameras in my fridge so I can ponder my food options without standing there in front of the open door. I guess I could just buy a few old-ass smartphones and cobble something together...

I keep a mental inventory of my food supplies -- it's not something I try or aim to do, I just remember this shit.

I can tell you how full my spice jars are right now without looking.

Probably another device that will spy on you, no thanks. I would design this myself if I wanted it though, it would also answer the life long question: "does the light really go off when you close the door?" :p

It's a picture not a live feed. Do you have more than twelve items in your fridge? A picture is not going to help. Do you take the eggs out of the carton? A picture isn't going to help. Do you label your leftovers? A picture isn't going to help. Do you keep veggies in the drawer? A picture isn't going to help. Are you a maroon? A picture isn't going to help.
