3 built-in cameras take a picture every time the doors close, so you can view what’s inside your fridge from your phone.

The first question that comes to mind is, "Red Squirrel, did you design this?"

The fridge.

Totally worth $5k to not have to open the fridge door to see what's in it... right?

Do I trust Samsung to provide updates for that system for the life of the fridge? No, not a chance, not a chance in hell.

There's things that should remain dumb or at least agnostic.

Based on my experience with their appliances it will simply fail just out of warranty anyway thus solving that particular problem.

"Don't we need more milk?"

"I don't know, let me connect to the fridge to check...."

Too bad this camera can't see through an egg crate.

"Our new x-ray cams allow you to see through egg cartons so you'll know how many eggs you have left and and they keep food fresh longer!"

As stupid as I think the cameras are, I have actually been looking for a good app to help keep track of the pantry... if I was able to input expiration dates that would help me know when I need to use something or at least clear it out.

I haven't been able to find something that makes this easy.

Wow, I have seen this advertised on TV with Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard but never thought they'd be asking more than 3-4 grand... That's a lot of loot.

My thoughts exactly. It's a multi-million dollar idea I think. amirite?

Oh and not to mention, if you buy milk in paper and NOT plastic, you're also screwed.

Me right now: "No way I'd buy this. Just an absurd price!"

Me when I'm at the grocery store making a hard decision about buying a new bottle of soy sauce when I'm 98% certain I bought one last week: "Motherfucker I should have bought that $6000 fridge with the camera so I didn't have to waste this $3!"

Clearly they need to add a milk storage pad with a built in scale, so you know how much by weight you have left in the carton.

Exactly my problem with most smart things how long will you support it.

Just don't buy/stock up on too much stuff and you should be good to go.

Yep. You could buy 2-3 'normal' fridges for that price.

Yeah, that's the problem. I got a giant fridge from a local scratch & dent place, it's like 30 cubic feet or something ridiculous, and it's still too small. I'd rather just buy a pair of all-fridges (if I had the space) & save the money. I've seen some people paint their fridges with chalkboard paint so you can write down what food you have inside & what food you need for your shopping list. Mine is so packed a camera would do me no good anyway :D

Yes, removing the whole fridge door, hauling that fridge door around the store, hoping you don't smear the chalk while doing so, and reinstalling the door when you get back home is far better than using a shopping list. (in other words, lists aren't useful when they aren't with you at the store).

You shouldn't pack your fridge so full. You aren't getting good air circulation, most likely have massive temperature gradients, and thus your food is spoiling much faster than it otherwise would. Plus, if you really pare down, you'll find you didn't actually need that 7th ketchup bottle in the fridge (or whatever it is you over-collect there).

We still use the HP Slate21 Pro that you put up in Hot Deals. Works great for our shared stuff and since it isn't attached to the fridge It didn't cost $5000.

While I agree the fridge doesn't need to be smart, I have a hard time trying to figure out what software upgrades a fridge would need. It can take a photo and send it online. What else will that fridge need to do differently in 10 years from now than that (that doesn't also require a hardware change)?
