I heard that Intel won't be making another CPU past 3.8 for sometime because they can't make it cooler and more energy efficient? Is this true?
 
intel is going to come out with dual core running at somewhere around 3.2 ghz and slowly inch thier way back up in speed. prolly a die shrink if done right might get them into the dualcore 4-4.5ghz range

but even if they make it to 4.5ghz amd just has to push thier chips into the 3ghz range to still have them beat and this isn't all that far out of reach considering A64 Fx's are overlocking thier already and this in on a 130nm process 90nm should be able to get them to 3.5
 
I think even a die shrink will help Intel until they can kill leakage and the only way that's gonna happen is by using high-k dielectric insulator and SOI.
 
Actually a birdy told me (NDA) that intel will in fact still relase a 4ghz part in the second half of 2005
 
Intel is headed towards 2MB cache and dual-core. They're not focusing so much on speed now. I'm anxious to see how good the performance is on the new stuff ...
 
if the 4Ghz comes out H2 05, it will require a new stepping god knows what temps it'll hit.

By that time AMD should have a 4200+/4400+ out, so I doubt the 4000+ will be in direct comp with the 4Ghz P4 due to price.
 
Even if they dont send out a 4Ghz part, the .65 micron process should allow them to, but at what cost to leakage, power consumption ?.

- Yes! 😀 This is indeed true, - the 3.8 is the very last :brokenheart: CPU from Intel. In the future they will concentrate their activities on chipsets for AMD architectures, electric bottle openers and woolen underwear for arctic living. 😉

Nah, I'm just kidding you. GHz and the P4 are dead games, but wait until 2006/early '07 and things may start rockin'. Meanwhile, there will be the 64-bit, 2MB L2 cache 600 series P4s, and then a little dual P4 core, not sure what they will be good for, but it's something.
 
I think things will start rocking for Intel much earlier than 2006. Nocona is already out, after all.

Will they catch up to AMD's performance? Only time will tell. 😀

I did say "Meanwhile...", but no, Nocona doesn't rock. Just another Xeon P4.
 
Cache is not going to give intel the performance crown. They selected their low-k substrate over a year ago, it should be hitting their cpus sometime in the near future, and the difference should be night and day for leakage and heat.
