3.5" to 2.5" adapter, NOT 2.5" to 3.5"....do they exist?

I want to hook up a 3.5" drive to a laptop 2.5", 44pin connector. Does anyone make adapters for this, and where?

I don't want a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter, I have one already...

cant be done,your laptop doesnt have the 12V line 3.5" hd's need.

Maybe buy a external USB hd eclosure & connect the hd to your laptop via usb.

Yes...but what use is a laptop with a 3.5 inch drive hanging out of the bottom?

You could just make your own, and then have a desktop PSU sitting beside it with a paperclip to jumpstart it to power the hard drive. (I assume the power lines from the laptop connector can't run a 3.5 inch drive.)

First, I'd like to thank the majority of you for crapping my thread...excellent, thank you for your input.


Now, on to more legitimate questions and answers...

I have 5v|12v power supplies for drives coming out the wazoo, I plan to use one of these, have done it before.

The laptop is basically crap, so right now I'm just thinking I'll turn it into a small pc, rather than a portable.
The laptop dvd drive is dead; I have another laptop drive that fits, but the face doesn't match the current laptop.
The laptop screen is cracked, but funtional...but still it's annoying to use.

I already made one once, but it was a total bitch and didn't end up working, I'm not sure why...the connector for the laptop end I got from another laptop, and soldering to the PCB contacts on the reverse of the plug wasn't very easy. Yes, I do know how to solder pretty well.

Well by the way you asked your question I was under the impression that you wanted to use a big hd with your portable laptop.

If you would have told us that the laptop in question was going to be used as a desktop machine & didnt need to travel then I would have suggested the use of an external power supply to power it but you didnt say that.

I have never seen a 40 pin (regular hd) to 44 pin (laptop hd) adapter,however I have see then the other way around.

So I guess it could be done but I have never seen such a device.

I don't think these are sold, laptops despite using 44pins are still standard IDE they just use a differnt connector that also supplies power, if you have a wire diagram you could prolly convert one of the 44pin to 40pin adaptors to a 40 pin to 44pin adaptor w/ a little soldering. Hope this helps...

I've never seen one - I had enough trouble finding a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor the last time I needed one and I've never come across the reverse. I think that your best bet is to get a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor, use a short IDE lead to connect the hard drive to the male 40 pin plug and then jury rig an M-F 44pin lead to go from laptop to convertor. You could then power the drive with an external PSU.
The main problem will probably be signal integrity but it's worth a shot.

I faced same problem several years ago when I wanted to use a normal 3.5" HDD on my Amiga that only takes (took?) 2.5" HDD.

I bought a normal 2.5" => 3.5" adapter (female 44pin and male 40pin). There was a molex connector to supply power to 44pin since the adapter is intended to use 2.5" HDD in a desktop system (you knew this, of course).

All I did was, plug the adapter to the male 44pin connector on the mobo (I suppose your laptop also has similar connector on its mobo) and ran an ATA 40pin from the larger side of the adapter to a normal 3.5" HDD. The only thing left is some way of putting power to the HDD, but since you already know how to dissect a laptop, I am sure you know how to do that.

The laptop only has the female connector, and the adapter I have also only has the female connector for the laptop drive. So the problem is that I'm trying to make a lesbian connection here

Lesbian connection, LOL! Now, that was tough :-D

Get 20 resistors and cut the legs, insert those one by one into your female 44pin adapter. Once it's securely inserted (should be snuggly fit), use your glue gun to apply thin layer of hot glue along the "legs" to keep 'em at place. And...voila! Now you have a transexual "male" 44 pin adapter (actually you can leave the last 4 pins out).

It takes patient, but should be doable

I had one of those adaptors once

IT was a 40 pin Female on one side, and a 44 pin female on the other.

I'll be dammed if i knew where to get one anymore.

I ended up using it in a DEC Multia cause the only IDE inside is a 44 pin connector
