not sure if this is a hot deal...

but i've been searching and looking at other posts on enclosures and read comments about finding an enclosure that has both the oxford chipset for firewire and cypress at2 for USB (instead of the prolific combo chipset). the firewire chipset is 911 for 400Mbit...don't think there is an oxford 922 (800Mbit) + cypress at2 usb enclosure...if not let us know

StorTecc PM-350C2-ETB Black Smart Backup Combo USB 2.0 (Cypress)/Firewire 1394 (Oxford 911) Dual Fan 3.5 Inch

What do you guys think? They only have this version in black i think. It also has two fans to keep the hard drive cool

If you're looking for a 5.25 version...this same vendor i think only has it with the prolific chipset. Click here for a 5.25" similar version (dual fan, cypress at2, oxford 911) but is a little more expensive.

Thoughts? If you know of anything better...please post 🙂

looks like a solid design, one thing tho is that it looks like it has a proprietary power cable. so make sure you don't lose that thing 😉
There's another enclosure listed in hot deals that's only $20, but looks like it'll do the job. And of course if you don't need an enclosure, order an IDE to USB converter for $20 shipped and just use that. GL

it is an ok price, but it is a good enclosure, cypress is the best for the USB and oxford is the best for firewire. For the 5.25 enclosure, it should cost less since they use crappy prolific chipset.

I bit and got it. I've been looking to get one for awhile. With this one having both firewire and usb, I decided to take the plunge. Here's the info:

Name Code Qty Each Options
-------------------------------------------------------------------
StorTecc PM-350C2-ETB DSSTC350C2ETB 1 40.99
Black Smart Backup Combo
USB 2.0/Firewire 1394
(Oxford 911) Dual Fan
Aluminum External
Enclosure for 3.5 Inch
HDD, w/ Tri-Color LED -
RETAIL

Subtotal 40.99
Shipping 5.95
Tax 3.18
Total 50.12

I wish I had a free shipping code, or some sort of coupon. But I think it's a good investment. I looked at other enclosures, and with the features this one has, it's reasonable.

I don't know USB very well. Is there a difference between enclosures that have Cypress versus another chipset for USB?

If I want just an aluminum 3.5" enclosure with fan and USB (don't care about firewire), what's a cheap but reasonable unit?
