CAN or CAN'T? ;)
I use this enclosure (not from this particular store) its pretty good. I've burned cds at 52x from it and dvds at 4x.

Does anyone know if these guys have a good rep?

I've been looking to get an external drive case.
This is the cheapest I've ever seen.
I was all set to buy one of those steel box models at Newegg but this looks too goo to pass up as-long-as no one has anything bad to say about the retailer.

It looks like a Bytecc except the prefix is "MP" rather than "ME".
The company name looks like "something" "Plus".

Why does it have an audio out jack?
Wouldn't you still need an OS and software to play any music from an enclosed HD?

Does anyone know what chipset it uses?

Is a USB with a separate PS better than one that gets it's power from the USB port?

Thanks

this looks a lot like the enclosure I have.

I've burned DVDs from it. the audio out is for optical drives, btw.

my only complaint about the one I got is that the USB interface is delicate.
I left my enclosure open in my room, and put something on it, and it can be touchy now as to the angle of the USB cable which plugs in the back.

but it still works, and with proper treatment, probably wouldn't act so funky.

this seems to be the bytecc look alike enclosure, yet alot of enclosures looks like bytecc, for example the plumax. The one probably use different chipset than bytecc, thats the reason why bytecc enclosures are more expensive. If you are looking to installed 300G HD, or 8X DVD burnner, the bytecc is the best way to go, other chipset will not support it.

1) this is the bytec

2) this device works well in windows and linux, i know from personal experience.

3) it is reasonably well built, but not perfect.

4) it has a ALI M5621 - A1

5) it has an audio jack so that any direct play audio CDs will output sound , don't know why you'd use this, thought.

by the way, it does have a small fan, some other models don't

also, this absolutely requires a USB2 cable, this controller does not put out enough juice to push the signal over a USB1 cable, you will get write errors..

some more info.

I have a TDK 4x DVD burner that works great in this enclosure. Can burn CD's at full 52x speed on my lite-on as well.

i have a number of these with hard disks in them, interface in acceptably fast.

for the price, you wont be dissapointed

Well for a few extra bucks(approximately 4) you can get a Bytecc with free shipping for 29.99 from Newegg (excellent with RMA's & service). Linky --->Click Me Click Me :D

syadnom,
This thing wont work with USB1.1???
I only have USB1.1 at the moment.
Do I have to get a cheap USB2.0 card to use this?
I wanted to go between my computer and a couple of friends' computers.
I know they don't have 2.0.
I thought I read on that company's site that this was backward compatible to 1.0.

Doesn't it come with a USB2.0 cable that is backward compatible to USB1.1/1.0?
The pics on Newegg don't show rails to screw a drive to.

I'm leaning towards getting this model but maybe from Newegg.
I think Bytecc OEMs the other one.
Does Bytecc's brand model have a different controler that wont give me write errors and will have enough juice to work on USB1.1?
Bytecc's site doesn't list the USB chipset. It only lists the oxford 911 chipset for the Firewire version.

Before this deal was listed, I was looking to get either this model or black box/mettle box (forget the name) from newegg.
Does anyone have any reasons to get one over the other?

Is there any current or future reason why I shouldl get the USB AND Firewire version over just the USB version?

Thanks

Busithoth,
I hope the USB connection isn't that jittery.
I want to use this to travel between locations.

should work with usb 1.x at the slower speeds.
firewire has better sustained speeds than usb 2.0.

and the ali chipset is keeping me from ordering this right now, i've read about heat/data corruption problems. =/

The "MP" prefix is the one CUSA offers for $50.

Bytecc's site doesn't list a chipset for the USB2.0.

I thought USB2.0 speeds were sustained and higher throughput than firewire.

I'm on the verge of getting this.

I want to use it alternately with an ATA100 HD, ATA133 HD and a cheap IED CD-RW burner.

If it slows, that's OK, as long as there are no errors and it isn't at a crawling speed.

usb 2 has a higher throughput (480Mbps vs 400Mbps) but firewire's sustained speed is faster.

Thanks DC.

I'm trying to keep costs down.
Is it worth the extra money to get the Firewire version or the Firewire/USB2.0 Combo.
Should I get a USB2.0 card?
I don't want errors on CD-R burns or on HD transfers.

Thanks

If you do not have USB 2 port, dont borther getting it...firewire might worth it depends on if you have firewire card already or not. Firewire does run much more stable than USB 2.0...personal experience..

I don't have FireWire.
I'd get a cheap card for this rig when I find one.
I sometimes see a $10 4+1 USB2.0 cards on AT.
Actually there's currently mention of a 3+1 Lucent FireWire card on AT for $15 from 4linkcomm.
Are you saying that I'll get CD-R coasters and bad HD transfers with this case and USB1.1 on my sys?

A friend is sending me a MOBO.
It may or may not have firewire.

Nevertheless, I want to be able to use a CD-RW and HD between my systems and friends' systems at different locations. At least one friend has only USB.
So, I suppose I need to get an external case.
I can get this deal at Newegg for $30 total including shipping, or I can add whatever, $10-$15, to get a firewire/USB2.0 version of this case.
I'd then keep an eye out for a cheap FireWire/USB2.0 card for this rig or stick with the MOBO and faster procy my friend is shipping me.

The fan is quiet in my opinion (I am right next to an air conditioner though) and it uses a standard PC power cord that was included in the box (as was the USB cable). I think it is very good for the price.

I am having a problem though and I think it is software. I can't seem to burn CDs! I put in a LiteOn 32x12x40x CD-RW drive and it goes through all the motions of burning a disc (using any software - Nero, BlindWrite, the XP ISO PowerToy burner, etc) yet the disc doesn't get burned. It's exactly like "test burn" is checked in Nero but it isn't!

Odd... Anyone? Windows XP SP2 using Acortech PCMCIA USB 2.0 card. Adaptec ASPI 3.71 loaded as is Nero's ASPI layer.

edit: Nevermind. I put in my Sony 12x8x32x and it works fine. I forgot the LiteOn got flakey. Sucks but at least I can use it to justify buying that MadDog 2500A.

The fan is pretty noisy compared to other enclosures I have and have used. The Firewire/USB combo is very nice, although I have yet to use the Firewire side successfully (may be another issue, I won't blame the enclosure just yet).

I have a Belkin enclosure that has served me well for a year or so, travelling all over in a small bag and possibly surviving a fall or two. I'm looking for a good 1U rack that can hold removable drives that is Firewire and USB 2 if anyone knows of such a thing. Glyph makes a cool one that is Firewire only and so does Apple with built-in RAID controller but they are more expensive than the computers that I'll be hooking them up to! Any suggestions on a rackmount hard drive system would be great.

I have one.... and the fan is enclosed, I can hear my HSF fan before I'll notice this... and my HSF fan is at ~ 30 decible. And I posted this a long time ago btw... I guess they have another sale. This is not bytecc's.
