I found this on the internet. This site has the 3.5"/5.25" USB 2.0 External Enclosure. It could be used as an external DVD-R drive or CD Burner as well as an external hard drive. This is a really really hot deal IMHO. Shipping was very reasonable considering how much this thing weigh. I ordered a cheiftec case, a few rounded cables and this external case and I got it within 2 days.

Here is the link

I picked one of these up a couple weeks ago (same model - from a different vendor - can't remember who but it was in a thread here on AT)...not a bad case for the price. I put an 80G Maxtor (another AT deal) in it. It's definitely not rugged, so don't think you'll be unplugging the drive and carrying it back and forth from home to work all the time. But for moving stuff from desktop to laptop at home it works great.

If you don't plan to install a CD/DVD drive in it, then go with the 3.5" enclosure instead. It is a lot more compact.

I planned on buying one today anyway, so thanks! But, I need it only for a HDD, so I didn't want a full 5.25" box. If anyone wants a 3.5 one at a good price, I picked up a cool one at 'Geeks this morning. I used a 10% off coupon, making the total $42.99 shipped. And, it looks like a good match if you have an aluminum case. Link

Dealsonic is horrible with customer service. One time i ordered a case from them and when I got it it was the wrong case and it was all scraped up. I e-mailed their CS and they told me I had to wait a few weeks for a new case. I am very gonna buy from them again.

This looks like the same one I got for $38 + shipping months ago at compgeeks. I'm not sure who was worried about it's durability, but I use this exclusively with my laptop, and carry it in the laptop bag every day. After 4 or 5 months, no probs at all.

Also, looks like the price on it is down to $28.99+ shipping at the initial link.

I bought this same item from NewEgg last week for $40.99. It worked fine with my 300gb Maxtor 5400rpm drive, but the USB 2.0 interface wasn't fast enough for my needs.

I really bought it for use with my Pioneer DVR-105 DVD-R/RW drive, but while it reads fine off the USB enclosure, it won't write to it. It actually records the Lead-In data (this was with an audio CD), and then got stuck there for 10 minutes before I aborted. I did this a couple of times, so I know it fails all the time.

Anyone else have better luck with this (or a similar item) as far as DVD-R/-RW burners go?
