3.2 MP Canon S30 for $409 good Deal???? What would be better?

Buy just raised the price on S40 (was $568). so I think they will probably raise price on S30 too. so act quick if you want this camera. about the lowest price you can find.
 
I highly recommend going with the Sony DSC-P5 instead of the Canon S30. You can find the Sony DSC-P5 (Not P50, the P5) for less than $490 using Pricegrabber.com. I did months of research and ended up picking it up back in November. I absolutely love it and recommend it to everyone over any other brand.

Repost - it gets better if you're in a state without Staples - you can PM to Staples to get it for less than $400 shipped. Camera is better than the Sony because it takes CF media - Sony only uses memory stick which is VERY annoying - assuming, that is, that I'm thinking of the Sony model you're referring to.

I disagree with TheMystic. Check out the reviews on www.dpreview.com for more info. Basically, Sony's lenses are not as good as Canon's. Also, the memory stick is a crappy media format when compared to the wide use (and size) of the CompactFlash cards. There's a ton of reasons, but Canon is known for its photographic capabilities, Sony is not. (And you can get the Canon s30 for $389, last I checked)

 
Don't mean to go off topic here but the Sony DSC-P5 is really a step below the Canon S30/S40. The Canon S30/S40 is currently one of the best compact digicam on the market. This is the general consensus even among most people in the Sony forum on dpreview. You can also compare the DSC-P5 review against the S40 review on dpreview and reach the same conclusion.
 
Brucelee / chanfo, of course, I'm just giving my opinion. You both have your own opinions as well. I haven't been to the dpreview.com forums for awhile, back in the day the only thing I recall being better about the S30 / S40 was the fact it didn't need to use the Sony memory stick format. Anyways, again, I was just stating my opinion. I considered the Canon S30 when I was doing my research but I couldn't sway from the Sony P5.

Anyways, I uploaded some pre-optimized (slightly reduced quality) 1280x1024 pictures to my website if anyone would like to look at the quality of the DSC-P5. Just normal shots though, one is in twilight mode of a bowling alley during "Laser Bowl" (blacklights, music, etc.). I didn't have it on a stable platform and people were moving around so it's not the greatest quality but you can get an idea of what the mode gives you when you'd normally not even get a picture out of the scene. I like some of the Sony cameras, but my only beef with them is their crappy memory stick format. C'mon Sony...do you have to have control of EVERYTHING??? I really wanted a camera with compact flash or smart media capability to keep more options open. That's just me though...
 
so which deal is hotter? I can get the s110 from dell for 334.96 SHIPPED(fREE SHIPPING) WHICH IS HOTTER?
 
Canon S40 has larger resolution (another 200x200 or something, check website for details), and is 4.0 MP. Otherwise they are virtually identical in construction. Go to google and type in "powershot s30 review" and see what turns up. There are a few review sites out there offering a side-by-side comparison.

FYI, the Staples angle on this deal is dead. Staples.com no longer carries the S30.

Edit: I got this camera two weeks ago and it kicks. NOW $406.95 at Buy.com, but OOS. eBates yields another $8 or so.
 

I saw some picturess off my friend's S30, and I really want one.

Any other good deals on it out there?

Is getting it NIB off fleabay from a reputable seller any worse than buying it from a store with additional warranty?
 
My opinion on the S30 vs P5 -- no comparison!! I considered the P5 before buying an S30, and the S30 is a much better camera in many ways. Here are my reasons for going with the S30:

Canon lenses are just better then Sonys (if you want a Sony, buy one with a CZ lens -- i.e. S75 or better)
Compactflash vs. memorystick-- much cheaper per MB and available in much larger sizes
LOT more manual control options than the p5 (p5
Greater ISO equivalency range (50-800 vs. 100-400)
More preset white balance options
Much shorter cycle time than p5 (1.9sec. vs 4.7-8.1sec. for large JPEGs according to imaging-resource.com)
Much shorter auto-focus shutter lag (0.75sec. vs. 1.5sec according to imaging-resource.com)
And I don't think the p5 has a real continuous mode (only 2 shots from what I remember), but not sure on this.

I could go on. But these are the major ones.

Ditto, rather than just "research" and read what other people say, I get to audition many digicams. The canon reigns.
