3.1+ghz on the cheap!

after a month of grief with my xp1800, I liquidated all my socket A stuff on ebay, and went for a p4 2.53. This upcoming price cut was enough justification. I subscribed to the buyers assurance plan that doubles price differences within 90 days. I paid 230, and the price should drop to roughly 190.00, so my final cost should run about 150 (yay)... but I digress...

I got the albatron mobo with the 845PEV chipset so I could still use my 512mb of samsung pc2700. After having a kt133, kt133a, kt266a, I was suprised to fund this mobo was around 35% smaller than what I'm used to. nice. Installing the processor was a bit of a whore, mostly because the mobo had something impeding correct seating, which unfortunatly took about 1.5hrs to discover. The stock heatsink was pretty ghetto. I mean the fasteners are ridiculous. Thankfully the processor doesn't seems as delicate as amd's (which can easily get f*cked up when installing a large heatsink with the ziff clips). Anyway, once everything was up I was happily suprised! 🙂

With just the stock cooling, I was able to do an easy 3.1ghz running the memory at just under 400mhz cl2. And even at 3.1ghz, it seems to have plenty of headroom (where my xp1800 @ 1.7ghz was running around 51c, the p4 @ 3.1 was 46c). Needless to say, I'm happy as clam!

I guess tonight I will try and push it a bit farther... 🙂))))

celeron??? Uhh..no. Have you seen the benchmarks at THG? While there's plenty of overclocking capacity, the cache is crap. I suspect the 400mhz 2.4 can prob do 3.2ghz easy, but right now everything's so cheap, it's hardly worth it. On top of that, I'll looking at resale value in april.

It depends on what you do with the Celeron...

For video/MP3 encoding the chip is top notch. For gaming or anything memory intensive the chip is not so good. If I was making a cheap rig for my wife I would get the Celeron 2 GHz if it was around $80. That's how much I think it is worth. Otherwise I would get a 2.4 GHz NW. 🙂
