3.0 @ 3.6. Help me get to 3.7

Running a 3.0c @ 3.6 on an IC7 with a Zalman alcu7000. 1.575v

Voltages seem fine on an Antec 380w. Cooling seems fine. (Not absolutely sure here as the IC7 reports high temps.)
Memory is running with 5:4 divider so its ok.

Boots at 3.7 with 1.6v with no problem and I can play games all day. But running benchmarks like 3dmark kicks me back to the desktop after a few loops. Sisoft sandra burn in will eventually lock the computer. (Frozen screen.)

What should I be looking at to help stabalize 3.7Ghz.

As far as cooling goes, Northwoods run quite hot.

However, I am unsure as to how you would reach 3.7Ghz without increasing the processor voltage which would, in turn, increase the heat output.

i am in the same boat with my prescott 2.8e
it seems to hit a heat wall around 3.4 to 3.6ghz
i got it to boot at 3.9 tho but it wasn't fully stable

i suggest you get water cooling if you wanna go much higher
even if it is just a P4c

Sometimes enough is enough =) Just cause Bob got his P4 to 3.7 doesn't mean all of them are capable of 3.7.

try reinstalling 3dmark. also, what games are you talking about because 3d games are x10 more intensive on your system then any benchmark is. usually its the other way around. people can get benchies stable, but gaming will be unstable.


if its only in 3dmark benchies, reinstall the app. you say it kicks you to the desktop, well that sounds like memory problems. try increasing your Vdimm a hair.

Video card memory?
I know its not my system memory. It's running just a hair under 200. (It's already been tested a lot higher with my old 2.4c)

I've been testing with Far Cry demo, UT2k4, and X2. All seem fine.

I'm not saying it should be stable at 3.7 and 3.6 may just be the limit, but usually when you can boot into Windows and play games...

Maybe I'll try a new heatsink. I don't think these Zalman's are built for this high of speed. (Strange that adjusting the fan speed doesn't seem to help temps much.)

Zalmans are made to be quiet. They work fine for mild overclocks, but you're gonna have to get something better to go higher than 3.6ghz. You passed the point of a "mild" overclock a few hundred mhz ago.

OK. I take it the SP-94 is the top contender right now. What heatsink to go with it that won't blow my ears off?

GAT options set to A-A-A-D-D
2.8v vdimm
might try 1.6v vagp too

Well, if you don't want to hear your computer running, it looks as is 3.6ghz is going to be your max. overclock. Not that 3.6 is somthing to complain about, though.

Definately consider the SP-94. I use it with a 92mm Panaflo M1A (Medium - 48cfm 28db ratings) which is near silent and keeps the processor very cool.
