Two yrs gone by, and i've learned i'm not cut out to be in engineering. but of course i came in that way, wasting quite a bit of time. but now i'm at a loss on what to do. my grades suffered, and can't go to the obvious alternative (DIS :p apparently 85/90% of engineering go that route...). ugh.. i have to register but don't know what to take..

how many of you have had this unfortunate thing happen to them? It seems like a huge huge waste.... if i just pick some simple major, i end up feeling like i've let my parents down and whatnot... but there's nothing i think i would go into... ugh.. i'm begining to think i should have started looking into the option of transfering :/

venting done.

do what you like, its the rest of your life, just accept the fact that your parents will be very upset with you.

do what you feel you want, not what anyone else wants. I went from CS to management, and couldnt be happier. I find this end of the spectrum 10000x more fascinating than making a stupid program that tells you how many syllables were in a text i input.

I'm sorry to hear that engineering hasn't turned out to be something that appeals to you.

If you're finishing the second year of pre-engineering courses, then it'd be nice to move into another major that used at least some of this. I agree with Iamwiz82 that business administration is worth a careful look (just think how many of us appreciate management that is technically competent :) ). You might also look into "technical writing"; I know it sounds a bit dorky, but the truth is that the best engineering ideas go nowhere unless they can be explained to non-engineers -- and we engineers generally suck at that! When I dreamt about changing majors, it was always computer science.

If you're thinking about transferring, then I'm guessing that you're attending some engineering/science college that doesn't have a wide range of other majors available. If so, then I hope your grades haven't "suffered" too badly because many colleges will not accept credits for transfer if you didn't receive at least a "C". I had a few college contemporaries who ran into this problem; we called it "flunking in" -- not bad enough to flunk out, but bad enough that you couldn't afford to transfer anywhere else without losing too much.

Very few of us really end up working in our degreed area for our whole careers. Just look at this as making a career change a little earlier than most ;). I really wouldn't worry too much about what your parents will think. I suspect they'll be happiest if you find something you like to do and are good at.

Good luck!

no, transfering was w/ the intention of business.. the way it works here is somewhat messed up... the non declared major can come in, take two yrs of easy classes, and get in... while ppl like me take a bit harder courseload and can barely, or just miss the cutoff requirements.

my problem is really don't have a clue as to what else i'd want to do.. i need to figure that part out.

I'm finishing up my 2nd year in college. I was interested in a CS major. So, I took some classes, but I'm not interested in CS. Not cut out to be a programmer. So, I decided not to declare CS a major and declared History instead. Next semester, I will start taking history classes. So, you're not the only one. Don't worry about the future. Pick a major, stick with it, and focus on getting grades. Then, everything will come together for you.

well, what subject do you like or are you good at?

I went to school as a EE, then realized I hated it.
I was good in math, but I fell in love with finance, so I got a degree in finance and now I work on wall street

GET OUT OF MY HEAD!
Hehe seriously though, I'm a CS major but History was always my favorite school subject (computers were my favorite hobby). We'll see.

I'm not sure that "don't worry about the future" is a good plan for a junior in college. While I agree you do want to pursue a degree in some field that you'll enjoy working in, you will not enjoy it much if you can't find work in that field. You might consider taking a trip to your school's recruiting office to see what kinds of jobs graduates in the field you are interested in actually got last year. Just what is it that history majors really do? You might be surprised... ;)

somethign in business was a possibility for me, but like i said, it's difficult to get into.. and there's only one window to do it in. but that's this school.. which is why i noted the possibility transferring.

8th major? heh... well, at least you're on one now :)

Another History major here, depending on what you want to do after school I am not sure that what major you have is god awful important, unless there are technical requirements, like CS or something. I'm going to try and get a civial service job after school.

I understand your dilemma more than I care too. I was in the same position when I was in college. The only difference is that it only took three semesters before the Enginreering courses weeded me out. Although I never felt like a failure per se. I wasn't happy that my grades were in a tailspin, but i knew that it just meant that Engineering wasn't for me.

I told you, individual studies. it's definately something i'd do if i had the time. meanwhile, i stuck in computer hell. come on, how is sports advertisement major not cool? besides, it's like creating your own major. you know that's where it's at. btw, are you taking ENGL393 next year?

Dude get a hold of yourself. Take time off from college. I did. Get off the treadmill if it's too fast. Come back when you're ready.

You go to UMD? I made the switch from CS to DIS. I'd say about 80% of DIS people are ex CS or engineering

In retrospect, I think I would've done much better in college had I taken a year off after college. That way, going into college I would would been fresh and focus. As it happened, it was just going allow as everybody does; graduate from highschool and then start college the following fall. A semester break may give you time to clear your head and figure out what you want to do. Heck, get a sh*tty job and work that for a couple of months and then come back. Nothing makes you appreciate opportunity and education like wokring a crappy, dead-end job and seeing the people that for whatever reason are stuck there. It sounds harsh to say, but it gives you perspective and the ability to really know what a great thing you have.

Davegod75, that's the idea. but because of the engineering classes, my gpa got hurt bad.. so that leaves me needed straight A's this semester just to make the minimum requirements. i'm trying, but it's really rocking on the edge...

neo, i can't take any junior level english next semester... i won't have more than 56 credits.

as much as i would love to take a yr off.. i don't know what i'd do, i'd have to start paying off my loans, and i have a feeling that i'd just cause a huge mess out of it all :/

Actually some parents are very understanding. It was funny cause up until grade 12 my parents would get pissed if I did bad and then the second university came aroudn it was "my life".
