2x60 RAID 0 or 120gig JB?

struggled to bring anything up on a search on this topic, but i am sure it must of been covered ?!

well my 80gig bot drive has failed (knew i should of checked it a few weeks ago when i was suspicous)

now my choice to replace, IMO, is to RAID 2x60 WD JB's with the same RAID card i use on my Maxtors (i have another, they're only AU$40) or to just stick with a 120gig JB as my boot drive.

1)obviously the RAID would be faster, but that will give me 5 HDD's and 2 opticals and all the cables, starting to really push for space, so hard to work on,

2)a single drive is slightly more secure, just a bit.

3)easier to install OS's on it, dont need RAID drivers to get that going

these are my issues that drive towards the single disk option, but not sure.

need to get this drive today too.

opinions ??

Since you've got more pros than cons, I'd go non AID 0. I think it's overrated. It's not 2x the performance all the time. Stuff loads faster because those are sequential reads, and there's always the chance of data loss. I corrupted my registry in AID 0 and thus had to reinstall the whole system. And yes, I should keep backups, so should everyone else.

Its really up to you. Raid 0 is faster, but thats also double the chance of losing data. Id rather have security myself. The performance difference isnt that big of a deal. A ata100 Special edition drive is fast enough.

yes i think you are right, i guess i just needed confirmation i was right

when i set my Maxtor RAID up i wasnt sure to go 32/32 for the video capturing i do and that i originally setup it up for
or to go 16/16 for the games directory i run of it.

i then said to myself i wish i could have two RAID's 1 for video editing and 32/32
and another at 16/16 for all other things

now the time comes i am thinking i wont ! LOL

i make myself laugh 😀

I would not use a IDE RAID 0 as my system drive unless you'll do backup's.
I've had a couple of IDE drives die using a Promise Raid Controller on my MOBO. Some people never have a problem so YMMV.

Personaly as a boot drive, I'd get the 120JB and not use the raid 0, performance won't be quite as good but you data is very much safer, and the 120JB drive is very fast as it is, unless your using apps from your boot drive that require very high STR I'd go w/ the 120JB, Just my 2 cents and Hope this helps.... 🙂

i image my boot partition every few weeks and store the image file on my server, so thats not an a issue,
but narturally i dont keep my other important files on my RAID and actually on a partition on the boot disk, so those are important,

well i got the 120gig JB

trying to copy the data off my old HDD using a new system here at work

XP wont allow me to format the WD in Disk mgr
comes up "Not initialized"
and an unknown file format, with a red cross

detects ok in Dev mgr though

i think i might have a dud!
passed the short test in LifeGuard though 😕
