Thanks for the link Pete. While we're on the topic of NVidia cards, which will perform better: 2 6800GS's in SLI or 1 7800GT? We'll consider them the same price (the 2 6800GS's are a bit more, but let's consider that void, for the SLI bragging factor :). Head to head, which setup would win? If you want to get more specific, I play COD2 quite a bit, along with a couple of free MMORPGs (anyone heard of KalOnline or SilkRoad?) I would like to play all of these at 1280x1024 if that would be possible with one of these setups. On another note, I've heard that the Opteron 165 could be overclocked quite well. Since this is fairly close in price to the x2 3800+ I was looking at, would it be a better option? Also, since this is a server-based cpu, would I need any special motherboard, or would it fit in any Socket 939 board? And would there be any compatibility issues with other components or applications?

I will be getting a new PCI-E compatible motherboard, which is another reason I made this thread. I wasn't sure whether I should get a Crossfire enabled motherboard or not. Anyway, now I'm a little confused. Which is better: the X800GTO2 or the X850XT?

The x850XT is better. An unlocked and overclocked x800gto2 can basically become an x850xt. The x800gto2 isn't really a good buy anymore when you can get a sapphire x850xt for $160AR from newegg.

i dont think the X1800gto will be pwning the the 7800GTX, the X1800 hardly managed it, i dont think a slower varient will

Define destroy? X1600XT CF is scores over 8700 in 3Dmark05. So would destroy be over 9000? How much of an overclock do you need to get that on a X850XT?
My mistake. I underestimated the performance of X1600XT Crossfired with the latest chipsets. It looks like you can get well over 9,000in 3DMark05, and possibly over 5,000 in 06. So are you claiming a X850XT will score over 10,000?

I'd say Crossfired X1600XTs do seem to outperform the single cards on the latest ATI chipset. That said, there are definately issues with the new hardware -- I think neither of those two sites were able to complete all their benchmarks. It could be power or driver related.

Hmmm..... I can't see 2x X1600XT's performing on that level when they cant even beat a 6800GS, but I guess so. Anyway it isnt worth the extra price. Here's the X850XT for $160: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102688

First, the x1600's get unproportionally high 3dmark scores because of the 12 pixel shaders. But in actual games they dont perform as well, usually only slightly faster than a 6600gt. Given that a x850xt or a modded gto2 is already at least 2x as fast as a 6600gt, it makes no sense to get dual x1600's if a single x850xt can be had for significantly less money.

some x1600xt benches

Also, a 7800gt is not the best bang for the buck by a long shot compared to a <$200 x850xt or a modded gto2. In some cases it's about 10-20% faster, in other cases it's on par, and it's even slower in FEAR. Add the fact that it's being discontinued shortly to be replaced by the 7900 series, and it doesnt seem like a good deal unless it drops to ~$230 or so.

The benches are from Nov 1/2005. Old drivers and I am suprised how much RD580 improves the performance.

Doom 3 High Quality FSAA 4X + Aniso 8X 1024x768: 77.2 fps
Far Cry High Quality FSAA 4X + Aniso 8X 1024x768: 73.36 fps
Quake 4 High Quality FSAA 4X + Aniso 8X 1024x768: 115.8 fps
Battlefield 2 High Quality FSAA 4X + Aniso 8X 1024x768: 69.92 fps

Seems to me like x1600xt Crossfired performs fairly well in games. But I don't follow benchmarks, so what does a X850XT do in High Quality FSAA 4X + Ansio 8X?

x850xt pe, 1024x768, 4xAA, 16x AF - Text

BF2: 90.9 fps
Quake4: 105.5 fps

Probably not the same benches, but it should give an idea of the cards' relative performance.
