ya I'd seriously look at OC'ing your main CPU or getting some Sandybridge love.

Which means at the very least picking a new mainboard, since the one I have's heart goes boom (not in a good way) when an x6 is overclocked in it.. AM3+SLi -- pref w/dual gigE nics. Any strong suggestions?

And look what happens, when you start to raise the resolution.

and? they are using a single gtx580 while the OP has much faster gtx480 sli and wants to go with an even faster gpu setup. not only is the gtx480 sli a much stronger gpu setup for the cpu to handle it also has additional sli overhead to contend with. plus they are using 4x and 8x AA where as the op says he does not even care about AA. bottom line is his X6 cpu would massively limit any performance improvement he is looking for at his res and preferred settings over his current 480 sli setup.

Did you miss the part where the OP is running 3D? He's said it multiple times, and that's where he's lacking performance. 3D puts twice the graphics load on the GPU - a much higher hit than raising the resolution an notch or using AA.

He would see scaling with a third GPU.

Prescisely - I was happy as a clam even at 2560x1440 (!) in "plain 3d" as far as FPS, then I went "down" to the 23" 120hz 1080p panel, and got the shutter glasses, and FPS somewhat went to hell when I added the Stereo3D.

nVidia lists single boards in the 2xx-series as suitable for this technology? Those must've been hard times. :)

CPU utilization graphs show me no maxed cores for any substantial time, 30-60% avg utilization across up to 3 cores, depending on the game.
