2x GTX 980 in SLI or the new GTX Titan X

Hi,

I have two GTX 980s in SLI. I been reading up on the GTX Titan X. Would it be worth selling my GTX 980s and buying a GTX Titan X when they are more available? I think I would come out even or hundred or two difference if I made the switch. I have a ASUS 4k monitor and a Asus ROG G-Sync monitor on my desktop. I just play games. I don't do any video editing. Thanks.

Thanks for the info! Would the 12GB of memory help in gaming at all?

Only if you are having any micro stuttering issues I'd say, and are willing to throw an aftermarket cooler or watercool the Titan X. Then you'd get comparable framerates, although better minimum framerates.

As far as 12GB being useful, no one has tested multi-monitor yet on the Titan X but several 2014-2015 games are using up around 7.7-7.8 GB on single monitor 4K.

Ok, thanks but I think I'm going to stay away from water cooling. I don't trust myself with water and electronics.

Nope. The 12GB is mainly for scientific and CAD use.

Its quite funny that my GTX 970M SLI in my AW18 had 6GB and that 980M have 8GB while 970/980 have 4GB

Making 8GB GTX 980s that have 512 more cores than 980M and higher probability of running displays with higher resolution than 1080p which is typical for 17/18" gaming noteooks? Or even 8GB 970s that tons of people SLI to run 4K displays where VRAM is highly needed? NOPE.

Nvidia. Where the hell is the logic in that?

Throw on an arctic accelero IV ($67 on Amazon) and you have a Titan X that is as fast as 980 SLI in average framerates with much higher minimum framerates.

So now the question is, to backplate or not to backplate? As far as I can tell that's the main difference between the accelero III and IV.

If the cooler is heavy, then backplate for sure. Why not just go AIO instead if you're looking into something other than stock cooling? Or better yet build a custom loop.

IMHO in the long run 1x Titan would be better. If I were you I'd try to sell them ASAP before they come down in price.

Then again we're 2 months away from 980TI which will be faster and cheaper than Titan, with 6GB ram should be enough for quite a while.

better go for the gtx titan x , because you will be in an advantage if you do sli in the future

What AIO fits titan X for sure ? I'd be interested.

The accerlero 120 fits but it has an even larger backplate than the extreme iv so I doubt it would fit most motherboards, particularly an X99 it'll block most RAM slots.

Anyway I bought an accerlero iv time to see if the backplate fits on my mobo or not. Supposedly you can't install the cooler without the backplate unless u mod the cooler yourself.

I don't think we'll see the 980 Ti until at least August and AMD likely won't have 390x out in quantity until July the earliest, with a paper launch sometime in June.
