I've been seeing a lot of very good deals on high-res monitors recently. I'm still rocking a pair of old 19in 1280x1024's and I was wondering if anyone had any advice as to whether having one large monitor or two smaller monitors was more helpful. I do some gaming, some standard productivity, and some simulation software and data analysis on my current set-up.

I have enough in my monitor budget to get a pair of 1920x1200 24in (dell u2412s maybe?) or 1x 27in 2560x1440 monitor (leaning towards either the Asus pb278q or HPzr2740w)

Has anyone been particularly pleased with either the dual smaller or single larger monitor set-ups for doing similar sorts of tasks?

I prefer my dual monitors over having a single monitor. But that depends what you do more. If you play games full screen all day go larger single monitor. I multitask all day and find dual monitors awesome.

I went with a the 27" HP and a smaller 21" Asus 1080p model. Since the Asus was cheap, it gives me the flexibility when I need a second screen, but I can rely on the HP for gaming or photography.

I really like the 2 monitor setup for most things. Easier to snap windows to size on it, and really a more useful aspect ratio when you want to have a large content view and use the rest of the space for tools, etc. Great to have two apps open when you need to copy back and forth between them. I'm done that on a single large monitor and it isn't nearly as nice. Also allows you to have one monitor focused on Color calibration and one for speed. You're native resolution will be lower for gaming so that's easier to drive as well. Plus....you can add a third one for surround view when gaming. ;)

I am running 2x24" (Dell 2410). I run one vert, one horiz. I run the web browser, IM, MUSH/IRC client in the portrait, and I run media and games in the Landscape.

It works really, really well.

I definitely like a dual monitor set up, but I need to update the monitors. I have a 17 and a 19, gonna try to save up to splurge on some matching 22" or 24" ones haha

27" or higher would be a splurge.
