Well, shelter is built and daughter brought home the pig last night. Ended up with a Hampshire. She was lucky enough to pick 19th out of about 200. Her Ag teacher said she got one that they believed would make the show, but it's all about how she raises him.

I can't believe this 40 pound, 8 week old pig is going to be over 200 pounds in 5 months.

What's the pigs name? Porkchop?
The first 6 months are pretty easy. They're really easy to care for until they're huge enough to go where they want. Good luck!

"Her Ag teacher said she got one that they believed would make the show, but it's all about how she raises him." Before that means anything, find out if all 200 kids were told the same thing. ;) It could be good news, or it could be tempering the lack of making the show with a "gee, I guess it's your fault."

They definitely were not. And, my daughter went in with her research done. She read this thread, talked to a feed store owner and did some internet research. She knew what she was looking for.

She was going to go with "Chris P. Bacon", but has changed it to "Oreo".

You will not believe how strong these animals are when they get big.

Better have a damn strong fence.

putting the nose rings on is always fun

Attention Little Miss CPA, for best chance of winning, please send selfies to my email.
Nose rings and other such devices for control of the animal are generally forbidden by FFA organizations. Up to 200 pounds, they're strong, but I can't recall ours at that age ever really challenging fences. Over 200 pounds & up, a single strand of electric fencing, a few inches above the ground will stop a pig in its tracks (usually.) Something like this: http://www.premier1supplies.com/fencing.php?mode=detail&fence_id=133 works to stop pigs. The energizer can get a little pricey though, but pigs don't need nearly as much voltage to be effective as a lot of other animals; they're actually at the lower end. The lack of a thick coat of fur is one reason; but even so, it still takes quite a pop on the nose before other animals will stop challenging the fence. But, pigs are smart - OP could probably borrow a charger for a week; and after a week, the pig will know, "stay away from the fence." E.g., I had a horny goat climbing over a 3 foot fence to get to female goats. I ran a strand of electric just above the top of the fence. 3 zaps in 5 minutes & I've never seen that goat try to climb over the fence again, even with does in heat 10 inches in front of him on the other side of the fence.

my son 9th grade, is in FFA as well and luckily we dont have to do the animal thing, between my 3 parrots and a dog i have enough animals, my kids school is more geared toward machinery and small engine repair is a skill that will last a lifteime. its a very rural school and most of the kids in his FFA class are farm kids and have animals. I wouldnt mind doing chickens, our town just passed a ordinance that allows up to 5 chickens to kept in the back yard.

Big +1. In the 90's, I had upstairs neighbors (twins, 19, blonde, and since this is ATOT I have to specify that they were women) but that's a whole different thread). Back then Vietnamese potbelly pigs were the fad and they had one. Not very big, but that bristle-haired bastid was strong and obnoxious. If you had anything it wanted, it just would not quit. Dense too, heavy for their size.
