"2nd" harddrive not found, how to set it up?

I just put together a new box and i'm having difficulty getting my old harddrive to register with the new system. My primary drive is two SATA drives set up in a RAID0 array, which after some effort, i got set up and both, together, now show up as one drive (C) which is how i wanted. I wanted also to set up my old harddrive (IDE) so i could tranfer data to the new drives and use it as a backup/storage. Problem is, when i hook it in, it registers as the primary harddrive and the new box dumps. I've set the old drive as a slave and in BIOS, set the RAID as primary and the IDE as secondary device. I also have a CDRW (should this be set as a slave too?), but even when set as a slave, the old HD causes problems. I got it to boot once into safe mode and could see the old HD, but not the CDRW. Otherwise, i get a message saying that the old drive is corrupted (which i know is not true) and can't get it hooked up. Can anyone make some suggestions as to how to get this old HD set up to i can at least, retrieve the data off it, if not still use?

ASUS P4 3.0
2 gig PC3200
320 gig SATA - RAID0
Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS Gamer
Geforce 6800 GT
CDRW
XP Home (SP2)

thanks,
