That depends on what hardware you have, and what kind of compatibility you're looking for...

Your system is capable of running both Win2k and WinXp. But I would suggest you install Win2k instead of WinXP. The reason is you only got 160MB RAM. The sweet spot for Win2k is 256MB RAM (160MB should be ok); while running WinXP, you should have more then 256MB RAM. Your HD is only 10G, as long as you don't set it up for more then 1 user(or adminstrator), you should have around 8G of HD storage after install.

Also I must warn you about WinXp with your set up. Some AMD (k6-2 or Athlon) system, might not shut down properly. The system wouldn't power off (it will hang @ Windows is shutting the PC off). So as for a more stable, better and more mature drivers, I would suggest Win2K.

Not trying to rain on your parade.. but personally I dont think you are going to gain much fromtheupgrade..I would put that money into a
new mobo/proc even a cheap duron/k7s5a system would smoke what you are using now....

anyway good luck with whatever you choose

I prefer Win2K to XP at the moment. Once XP is improved I might consider it again, but my last encounter was a bad one D:!

I'll be going from WinXP to Win2K soon(soon as in when I have the time to reinstall).

WinXP isn't too bad, but to me it holds no advantages over Win2K, but my game compability has been somewhat worse in XP, and there are lots of small annoyances that aren't much by themselves, but add up quickly.

I prefer 2k it takes too long to optimize a xp box after installation. For example, I don't want the buit in cd burner or zip utility. XP is good when working on systems that are fully integrated such as compacts compaies like that did not have a lot of drivers for 2k but they have them for xp. XP probally will be the way to go after a couple of service paks.

Hello,

I am using Win2K right now for the simple reason that I don't want to call microsoft everytime something happens with my computer. But that aside, Win2K is as stable as WinXP and so far I'm very pleased with it.

I went from 98 to XP and found it plays all my games fine and is rock stable for me.

In your situation I agree with WageSlave, I would upgrade the board, cpu and ram then buy & install WinXP,however I agree 160mb is a little low for XP so you are better of going with 2K for you current PC(I still think XP is the better OS of the two).

<< I don't want the buit in cd burner or zip utility >>

That`s not a problem ,I use Nero for burning ,and Powerdesk 4 Pro for zip files etc, WinXP does have those programs you mentioned but there`s nothing stopping you using your own like I do.

Most people have decent size harddrives so not a problem,Nero & Powerdesk 4 Pro take less 25mb each on my PC,as for memory it`s so minimal and remember XP is like 2K ,good at handling memory.

Even if you install 2k it takes up HD space and uses memory ;).

win2k over XP all the way. i dont like XP very much. i have to install lots of machines at work and theres no real benefit to XP. it just puts an ugly interface on a solid OS. since i remove the fancy bells and whistles anyway, i go with win2k.
