2D tearing w/ Powercolor 9600Pro

Well, having a little problem...more of an irritation, really, that I hope you guys can help with. Running the following PC:

http://www.anandtech.com/mysystemrig.html?rigid=26333

Been noticing a substantial amount of 2D tearing when working in XP Pro. Moving an explorer window is the worst. 3D performance is fine, but this 2D just from working at the desktop is annoying. Running at 1280x1024x32 @ 75Hz refresh. Same problem even bumping it down to 1024x768. I do have VSYNC on for OpenGL and D3D apps, but does that have any impact on 2D performance? Is there a way to fix this, or is this card just a crappy 2D performer?

Thanks!
Tom

Thanks!

See if it happens at a lower resolution at either 75 or 100hz.

I lowered the refresh to 70 (from 75) and it seems to have really helped reduce the tearing. Any disadvantages to 70 vs. 75? I can't really tell a difference between the two.

I guess my primary concern is why the heck is it doing this? Could it be a driver issue? Should I try reinstalling the 3.10 drivers?

Ok, well, I'm at my wits end. Being nitpicky, I even noticed the tearing at a refresh rate of 70Hz. I mean, maybe all cards tear in 2D at 1280x1024x32...I don't know. I notice it on my wifes PC with a GF4 ti4200, and here at work on my Dell laptop. They just don't seem as bad. I just wouldn't expect this kind of performance from a 9600 Pro. So, unless anyone has any suggestions on things to check then I'm just going to reformat and reinstall tonight or tomorrow. I just wish I could remember if this system did this all along. Argh....frustrated.

I have PC 9600 Pro as well
I run at the same resolution u do

no problems here.. I'm using the latest driver from PowerColor though
not ATI's reference driver...

I dont think theres much changed to it with the PC's version, just maybe optimized a little or checked for more compatibility..

anyways i have no problems with my
try the drivers at:

I have vsync to always on. That's the funny thing...games don't give me any problems. I never notice tearing in games. It's only in 2D mode like at the desktop....dragging around an explorer window of all things.

Thanks for the link. I'm downloading those drivers from the website now. Is there anything special I need to do when installing them? Can I just do an add/remove from the control panel on the current 3.10 drivers?

Tom

why don't u try 1280x 960 since im pretty sure that is a 4:3 monitor instead of 1280x 1024 which is like 5:4 which is for LCD's and see if that helps. I relize the 1024 x 768is also 4:3 and is broken but it may help.

EstoyLoco: Downloaded and installed 3.9s from Powercolor's web site. Same problem, but thanks! It was worth a shot.

JBT: Changed to 1280x960 and that really seemed to help. I still notice some tearing but I guess you can't escape that 100%....can you? Am I just being too danged nitpicky?

Thanks everyone for the replies so far....and I hope I'm not being a nuisance!! 🙂

Tom

Are you sure its running the refresh rate you're setting it too? Look on the "displays" tab in the advanced display properties, next to the monitor icon is it running what you set it to?

Hmm, I got a AIW 9600, just a bit faster than the 9600 Pro and I can't duplicate the prob.

My system is quite similar to yours in most aspects (check sig). I think you've got some super-duper vision and should be deemed an official member of the Hall of Justice.

🙂

Wow, we do have a very similar system. Perhaps it's your extra .5 GB of RAM....but I doubt that would be it 🙂 Of course, why don't you send it to me and let me see if that solves the problem...

Anyways, I've had enough. I've backed up all the data to a network drive and will probably be reformatting and reinstalling tomorrow. I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping that fixes the problem. If not, I guess I'll just live with it. Like I said, everything else runs fine...it's just an irritant at this point. I just don't understand how a card that can perform as well as it does in demanding 3D games can behave like this with simple, stupid explorer window. GRRRR!!!

Tom

Alrighty... I'm thinking this is a question of standards... The extra .5GB does not make a difference, be assured. Anyway, the dragging effect I have payed more attention to and despite running the TV on or off, have determined... If you watch the edges of the window like a drunk on a bright yellow line... Massive tearing! 😉 Please don't take offense, but I probably misunderstood your point earlier. I think this is an unfortunate effect of modern tech and not neccesarily the 9600 Pro. I would have a hard time believing any other vid card would not do this with current display technology. I welcome an alternate opinion... Kiss Kiss.

Anywho... How 'bout those Mets?

Yeah, I knew the .5GB wouldn't make a difference... 🙂

Yep, the edges of the windows are where the tearing is most noticeable. But it is still noticeable in things like Explorer. For example.... if I have a split view explorer window open, with the folders on the left, files on the right....grey bar down the middle separating the two... dragging that window still has an apparent tearing on the bar. Is that normal on yours as well? Anyone else? I just really wish I could remember if this has happened since I built the system. I just don't think it has since I would have noticed it like I have now. I'm going to wait and see if I get any more feedback from you guys. If not, then tomorrow afternoon she gets wiped clean and a reinstallation of everything will begin. Yay. What a fun way to spend a night! :/ I really do think I'm at a point where I'm either going crazy, or I'm just being extremely damned nitpicky. It might even be both! 🙂

Tom

Yeah, that seems to happen here as well, but I haven't ever noticed it before. I will check on some 2.0 Ghz P4s w/ Intel Gfx and some 500 Mhz PIIIs w/ Ati Rage Pro tomorrow and let you know if there's a big difference. I am betting it's mostly a matter of display tech (CRT monitor) limitations / overzealous expectations... (not to be rude at all... Wish I still could boast that)

I'll post sometime tomorrow when I get some time.... Instructing a class, and therefore enslaved.
