Does anyone know if an ATI card can have its fan automatically change fan speeds when switching from 2D to 3D mode in vista?

I know I can't with my 8800 GTS.

You can do this with third party programs at least on XP. ATI Tray Tools and ATI Tool both support it. I always ran my X1900 like this, as the steadily increasing pitch of the fan sound (the default setting) got on my nerves.

I believe Rivatuner lets you do this with Nvidia cards too, but I'm not certain.

Rivatuner's fan speed worked with 38xx aswell, we just have to wait for Unwinder to update Rivatuner soon for these newer cards to be supported.

Rivatuner doesn't let me adjust it in vista, I read a long time ago that NVDA drivers for vista didn't allow changing the fan speed.

I just tried again in Rivatuner and can't. Maybe I'm using an older version and a newer one fixed that, perhaps I'll try downloading a newer one if there is one.

2.09 is the latest Rivatuner. There is no need to really change the fan speeds unless you are having a problem- both nvidia and ATI adjust fan speeds dynamically dependent on load and temperature. If you simply cannot find a solution then you can flash the BIOS having modified how fan speeds work. RBE (Radeon Bios Editor) does this for ATI cards and I am sure Rabit or Nbitor does the same for Nvidia cards.

I was using 2.06, I just switched to 2.09 but now I can't even overclock the card, lol...maybe the newest driver will fix that, I'll install it later today or tomorrow.

I reckon I'll be getting a 4870 in the next few days or weeks though. I thought about getting a 4850 and an HR-03 GT and overclocking it...but then for 50ish bucks more I get the GDDR5:D
