290x usage spikes

Playing World of Warships at 2560x1440 on highest settings, the gameplay feels smooth. Should I be worried about this usage graph?

Rest of my specs are in sig and my GPU temp is less than 60C at load. Freesync is turned on for my Asus MG279Q (capped at 90 fps) but I'm pretty sure with freesync off the usage still spikes.

Is my 4790k not keeping up with my video card?

Few things: GPU load isn't always captured properly with afterburner. Click "Enable unified GPU usage monitoring" in the settings.

Also are you using frame limiters or vsync or similar? If so, that will lower GPU usage as it won't render if it doesn't need to.

Thanks - enabled unified GPU monitoring and disabled vsync, and the usage graph seems better?

Looks like you are still limited by something as it should stay close to or at 100% all the time while gaming if you don't have any frame limiter. What is your CPU usage / mhz like?

My 4790k CPU is at stock 4.0GHz, I haven't tinkered with it at all and usage is not high across the cores when in game, maybe ~50%?

Perhaps it's just a case of the game being non-CPU/GPU demanding?

I believe Crimson drivers default w/ frame limiting on the global profile

Not sure what/where this is but will have a look in the settings...

The game is single/dual thread performance limited.

Overclock your CPU.

It feels smoother , but I'm not sure if it's a 'placebo effect'... I loaded up bf4 and GPU is pegged at 99-100% the whole time. Maybe Wows just doesn't need / want to use every bit of my GPU, usage still dips into the 70-80% range but hey as long as it feels smooth I'll just leave things as is for now. (usage graph now much improved over the 100-to-0-to-100 spikes in the op) Thanks for the help everyone!

Side benefit of this thread: cpu Overclocked to 4.7ghz 🙂

(Surprised still getting so much mileage out of this 2 year old chip)
