So after paying 50 dollars for HL2 and ~20 dollars for HL2EP1, a total of 70 dollars, I have to pay another 50 dollars for HL2-EP2?

I'm sure you can save money by getting it through steam, probably only cost you $49 instead of $50. 🙁

I'm looking forward to this release but if they truly do try this kind of retail rape tactic I may avoid it.

No guys...the bundle is now changed to include Ep1 and the original game. On Steam and in the retail channels you can still buy just Ep2 alone for the normal MSRP, whatever it may be. This news is ONLY related to the package bundle called "Black Box" and is now rebadged as the "Orange Box"

But, you see the problem is if you activate the single product code and steam says "that product does not exist please try again" or something like that...

I just don't know exactly how it works...does it activate a single product on steam or get you access to the collective pieces?

According to Valve, the coupon isn't active yet. All three games are supposed to be released simultaneously sometime this fall. But the coupon should be good if you wish to play Day of Defeat:Source now. I would imagine that the coupon will simply give you access to the three separate games once they're released.

From what I've read, all Valve did was to change the available retail package from the Black Box to the Orange Box. It sounds as if the Black Box will still be available online through Steam.

That would make sense...I wasn't sure how the whole coupon worked.

How did the activating go?
I am gonna try mine Monday night.

worked fine and gave me day of defeat right then. i dont see any indication in my steam account though that i have already purchased the other 3 games. im sure they aren't going to screw everyone that got that blackbox card but i wish my steam account gave some verification that i will have them on release.

You guys who got the coupon are not screwed. Valve only canceled the retail version of Black Box, but you can still buy it through Steam.

Thanks, will be activating mine tonight.
I am pleasantly suprised that it included Day of Defeat , as I am one of those that had bought the collecter's edition HL2 in the store and didn't realize until DOD came out that it wasn't included , and I wasnt' going to give them any more of my money for it.

Even if there is no black box at all I am sure it will be easy for them to tie our coupon codes to the 3 games that came with the card .

Ok , when I go to activate mine . I get to the part where steam starts up and I get an error box that says
"The specified subscription is not available for credit card purchase"

I went to steam support and there was this exact topic. It said to clear your IE7 cache and restart Windows. I did that and still the same freakin message. Any ideas?

EDIT: Ok I am stupid, I just went into Steam directly and went to activate key and it went smooth. It said the ATI bundle(or something like that) had been activated.
It shows DOD:S , but not the other ones. I guess it will show them when they become available.

It turns out that Valve has decided to cancel the Black Box, package worth $39.99, and offer nothing else but the Orange Box. Orange Box costs $10 more, but offers full versions of Half Life 2 and Half Life 2: Episode One.

But, owners of the coupon and potential owners of the coupon can rest assured that the product they wanted to activate will be The Black Box. Valve only cancelled was the retail version. For Radeon HD 2900 lovin' with Episode Two, Team Fortress 2 and Portal, there is no danger.

We give special thanks to Doug Lombardi, for his quick reaction and replying to us quickly.

You know, Valve will be the only company that gets gamers to buy two copies of its games while others struggle to sell one.
