290 and 290X Out of stock @ Newegg!!

Just looked on Newegg and all 290 and 290X are currently out of stock. I'm assuming it's the Miners snapping up everything they can get ahold of. This is demand that AMD and/or retailers didn't plan for. I wonder how long it will last?
 
I was just going to post this. Was planning to buy a second one... Is this going to happen to every new high end AMD card from now on? Annoying. :|
 
AMD must be saving enough GPU's to satisfy the incoming non-reference wave
4Q13 financial stats will be interesting to see with so much going on for them
 
R290/X is, believe it or not, the most efficient GPU to mine coins with.

Radeon HD 7950 gets ~600Khash/sec @ ~300W = 2.00KHash/Watt
Radeon R9 280X (HD 7970) gets ~700Khash/sec @ ~340W = 2.06KHash/Watt
Radeon R9 290 gets ~900KHash/sec @ ~330W = 2.73KHash/Watt
Radeon R9 290X gets ~1000KHash/sec @ ~360W = 2.71KHash/Watt

Just need to give them no fan speed limit and they fly, literally. 🙂

I think this is newsworthy. It was newsworthy when it was Tahiti selling out and now it's spread to Hawaii. It's Christmas season, and 3wks B4 Christmas they are having shortages. These aren't the mainstream volume models. These are top of the range high ASP, high margin models that typically move in lower volumes. At this rate they are going to sell every one they can get their hands on. I don't know how fast manufacturing can be shifted, from GPU's to PCB's, to complete cards, and everything in between, but this is a really volatile situation. If you up production what happens if the bottom falls out of mining? If you don't, then how much business are you losing? Does nVidia continue to ignore this market, or do they join the bandwagon? This could be more lucrative than the pro market simply because of the shear volume being sold and all without a dime being spent on support. They are just selling hardware. They are uncontested. No Crossfire support, not worrying about getting that last percent of performance so you can be on top of the benchmark charts, who cares if the fans are noisy, nothing. Just make the hardware put it on the shelves and take the money.

Rdit: They are now showing 1 model of 290 in stock and 2 models of 280X. I wonder how long they will last? I imagine they will start jacking prices if this continues.

Look again. I dove right at that 290 and it showed "out of stock" on the product page. Seems like they're being camped at the moment. :\

Well, it was in stock when I posted. People must be camping out for them, as you say. They have a limit of 5 per customer. Sounds like they are just trying to limit the people buying them to resell.

Even in Namibia. We are almost completely sold out of 280X and completely sold out of 290X and they aren't even here yet!

I believe only a few NV cards actually caught fire, exploding components and all. And it was related to menus such as Starcraft II.. not the sort of heavy load that mining puts on GPUs even! 😉

I expect it to peter out once LTC difficulty goes up high enough that mining with consumer GPUs is no longer economical.
 
I think that somebody is buying up all the inventory to try and drive up prices in the secondary market.

Lots of unopened 7970 and higher level AMD product available on eBay at high buy it now price, not terrible out of the ordinary, but not as much used AMD product at that level though, so I think some ass or group of asses is manipulating.

Maybe somebody is/was trying to get ahead of demand for these cards with all the press on virtual currencies, bitcoin and lite coin.

Recently I tried to make it sensible to buy a new 760 or 770 for a rig I'm building, but will hold out for a 280x at $300. NVidia pricing just isn't competitive.

My 7950 cards have been mining 24/7 since last March. And my reference 6950s before were the same. Not one issue. If they're built properly (and/or the driver doesn't turn the fan off or doesn't feed too much voltage) they won't explode... :sneaky:

With the stock cooler, in a well ventilated case, with the fan allowed to hit 100%, it probably won't happen. The room its running in will become nice and toasty, and sound like there's a jet turbine running in it though.
 
I'm having so much trouble getting my card. It was supposed to arrive yesterday but it's still over 1000 miles away 🙁.

Probably slim to none considering mining has been happening since HD4870 days and every generation of cards since then has handled the load just fine. In the off chance the 290 dies, there is warranty. Those who are mining tend to buy 2 or more cards so it isn't end of the world if one dies. The best part is mining funds pay for future cards which means if a mining card dies out of warranty, it cost 'nothing' to acquire it since it has already been paid for by previous mining cards.

It's one of the biggest retailers of GPU parts in US/Canada. You can also add to the list Futureshop/BestBuy, Canada Computers, Amazon, NCIX.

yeah you are right. the HD 7950 / HD 7970 / R9 280x / R9 290 / R9 290X are all very difficult to find in stock. hopefully AMD improves supply to cash in on the tremendous demand for their GPUs due to mining craze. 😀
 
I was going to try to sell my 7950 to finance an upgrade, but looks like I would be stuck without a card if I did that now, since there wouldn't be anything in stock to buy!

yeah wait for a custom r9 290 like the asus dc2 to launch. grab one and then sell the HD 7950.

Probably true if you want to upgrade to another AMD card. But if you're interested just in gaming and not in mining/HPC, you could sell your 7950 for an inflated price now, and upgrade to a good Nvidia card like a GTX 780.

Yeah, I'd rather stick with AMD for the sake of mining, otherwise a 780 would definitely be tempting me.
