28hour WU on XP2000+!!! Any suggestions?

Hey Everyone,

Just looking at the stats page....seems like I could be, and should be able to, do a lot more! Recently upgraded my system to the following:

AMD XP2000+
512MB RAM
80GB WD HDD w/ 8MB Cache
MSI KT3Ultra2

Running WinXP Pro. Can't figure it out...should be able to do better than 24+ hours/WU! Is there any kind of memory setting or something else that can help get me down to where it should be? My PC is usually idle at home all day long, and at night. Have the screensaver set to SETI, use to have the monitor turnoff, but that didn't help. Left last weekend and left nothing but the virus scanner running.

One thought is my scheduled tasks. I have McAfee update itself every night, scan every other night, and have it defrag twice a week. THe system rarely needs to be shut down unless I'm booting to Linux.

Any thoughts?
Thanx,
Jazzman

Hmm, my 1800+ can pull sub 4hr wu's. Something is definitely wrong. Is any other process taking up your cpu cycles?

Oh yeah, and stop defragging so often. SETI and defrag going at the same time is never good, because SETI writes to the disk every minute and defragging resets when a program writes to the disk.

Defrag every couple months and turn off SETI (and every other program) while you do it. You're not gaining anything by defragging biweekly.

Defragging twice per week can actually cause damage to the hdd. Most experts I've hear have suggested defragging once per month or couple months.

I would...
check power saving options to make sure the hdd is not powering down.
Shut off all screen savers.
Set monitor to power down.
Remove the screen saver and intall the CLI client.

After all the above is checked. Make sure you set your WU's to my e-mail address. This will insure that your machine will get peak performance. LOL

Yeah, it increases your wu count by 5-6 a day. 😉
