27? TVs around $300

etech

Lifer
I need a new TV for the bedroom and with a son in college and needing to buy a new car my budget is around $300. I live in a small town and don?t have the Best Buys and Costco stores here, so Sears is about it. These are the three I am looking at. Do you have any suggestion as to which one to choose over the others? I?m leaning towards the Toshiba right now. Please don't suggest a Wega unless you have a source for one around $300. I did find the Toshiba for $20 less than the Sears price at goodguys where they have free shipping. Sears will price match.

Philips 27 27PS55S

Toshiba 27 in. 27A41

JVC 27 in. AV-27230

Thanks!

I have a Samsung 27incher, bought it @ sears.......I like it alot, but I doesn't have Svideo inputs (which I dont need for where the TV is), but I'd probably go with the Toshiba (I have a 32inch Toshiba for my HT, and it's really nice)

I would go with the toshiba. They make very nice tvs. My parents have had a toshiba for a long time without any problems. The picture quality is also very good. I also have a Toshiba dvd player that I love. Personally, I feel they make very good products. Although I am sure the Phillips is good too. Just my 2 cents. 🙂

Who cares????

Anyway, I've always liked those JVC televisions. They have good picture quality and are pretty well made. Just my opinion.

Aren't you proud that you added nothing to this thread?

I was shopping for a 32" TV last week myself etech, but also looked at some 27 inchers. I settled on the JVC 32" AV-32230, which is the big brother to the JVC 27" AV-27230 you're looking at. The Toshiba wasn't available for comparison where I was, but between the JVCs, RCAs, and that exact Philips model in question the JVC has a slightly better picture and definitely better sound on its own. But hey, if you can get free shipping ($35 for me)...

Edit: I gotta ask, why are RCA TVs priced so much lower than the competition anyways? The picture quality was only minimally worse than any of the others...

i was going to get the toshiba but the quality isnt that great. I got that JVC for like $299 + tax @ best buy 3 or so weeks ago. Its awesome!

I can't really help you pick a brand, but I don't know how good of an idea it is to have one shipped to you. They package the things with a LOT of styrofoam, but with some of the UPS/Fed-Ex guys these days I'm not sure it would help. 🙁

Personally, I would buy it local and pay the extra $20. That way it's much easier and cheaper to return.

Hey my school teacher told me to never buy Toshiba cause they sold technology that we gave them to the Russians that makes submurines quiter.

Therefore I always avoid Toshiba products.

Not sure where that is coming from, I have a 27' Toshiba and the picture quality is fantastic when using the component video inputs.

I have that toshiba..... i love it. Got it at Best buy for 300 dollars.. link i know you dont have any best buy's around, but maybe you could order it online or get someplace to pricematch it.

Well, the phillips has comp. in. Plus, I have a JVC and the color bleeds like crazy. And I am really not to fond of Toshiba's, in my experience they just aren't "quality". If it matters, I believe consumer reports rates phillpis pretty high.

I've had no experience with the lower end Toshiba TVs (I have owned a 27" Toshiba Cinema Series $499 since June 2000). But I can tell you that mine has been problem free, has tons of inputs, 2 tuner PIP and all the bells and whistles.

I would actually suggest visiting a local A/V dealer and asking them for their opinion. I wouldn't even consider the Phillips, it should be a showdown between the Toshiba vs JVC. When I buy a TV reliability and picture quality are my two most important factors.

Also remember that CostCo has a very liberal return policy. Best of luck on whatever TV you choose.

Thanks to all the people with helpful responses.

I am going to wait a week or two and see if a good deal comes along. After reading and doing some more research I had decided to get the Toshiba. I then just decided to move the Proscan 27" from the living room into the bedroom for now. With the son off to college we really don't watch much TV in there now.

RossMan, this is a Small town, Sears is the local A/V dealer. 😱

The toshiba also has component in.

I was going to buy at Sears, they will price match internet prices but add in the shipping. Goodguys is having free shipping right now. That knocked about $20 of the price Sears wants.

True, back in the 70's or early 80's Toshiba sold some CNC milling equipment to the USSR that allowed them to mill better propellars for their subs. The people that did that at Toshiba are gone as is the USSR. Tme to move on.

Which quality are you talking about? The pictures seemed comparable, thought the cable system at Sears is horrible which makes it difficult to compare sets. I haven't found any references to differences in build quality.

Thanks again for all of the other replys.
