27 inch 1080p

Now that 1440p monitor has arrived, I think I can answer this much easier. I would not buy a "27" 1080p monitor. A "27" at 1440p is just adequate to me. As the screen goes bigger you really need that extra resolution and then some. Let me put it another way I bet 4k looks sweet at say 24-30inches.

On a side note, I really like my new monitor, no dead pixels and very little if any backlight bleed, great overall PQ.
 
I had a 27" 1080p monitor, and it wasn't good for text. I had to upgrade to 1440p.

I would steer you in that direction or to get a 24" panel.

thanks to all your guys help ive narrowed down my needs,

first off I went to best buy, and you can read about many things but seeing monitors, the size, the resolution, the glossy vs matt, etc, well a picture is worth ten thousand words.

REQUIRMENTS
Im looking for a 27 inch 1080p ips panel with 6ms or better, something with low input lag as I will use this for gaming rpgs mmos rts and some fps.

NOT REQUIRED
I would love something with a true 8bit panel that had a light matte coating, as some of the matte coatings like on dells are I belive too much and hides a lot of the ips quality. I dunno do they call this semi gloss, XD.

anyways I have around 400 bucks, oh and I do need a three year or longer warranty.

^You are unlikely to find an IPS panel with a response time better than 6ms...or even 6ms exactly. Some exist at the 6ms range, but that is G2G as quoted by LG, i.e., best-case scenario numbers.

As for input lag, IPS again is not the snappiest. Best way to minimise lag on an IPS-based display is to get one that has minimal inputs (e.g., just DVI or HDMI) no scaler (so run it at native res only) or OSD, or excessive post-processing effects.

Your 3-year warranty requirement is also a constraint.

I am not able to offer a recommendation for these requirements. I can for 27-inch 1440p (for 'most' of your criteria) but not 27-inch 1080p. Maybe others can help
 
27" @ 1080 here. For movies and games it's great and you don't notice the pixels. For productivity and text, it looks a bit low-res. Kind of like a hybrid small TV/large monitor. If you spend more than ~25% of your time doing productivity/text based stuff, a higher res or smaller screen is probably preferred.

No it was not something wrong. It's just that 1080p on a 27" monitor at computer monitor distances(70-100cm) is just to few pixels. I think that 1080p on a 24" is on the low side. But on a 27" it's just looks incredibly pixely. Text was hard to read because of the pixels. I didn't have to look for them. They where very easy to see.

Your talking about a measly 10 PPI difference. You make it sound like it's 30. If you can distinquish the text difference then you have super human abilities good sir.

True, only 10 PPI difference. Though in percentage terms, it is a 10% difference.

But seriously, 10PPI is neligble. For people to claim they see a pixelated difference in TEXT is assine. Graphics, sure, plausible but it's moot. 10PPI is literally, almost nothing. But let's put it in perspective.

On a 15.6" 768p laptop text is quite pixelated (major complaint with that resolution other than working area) and that is 100 PPI. Bought a 1080p 15.6" laptop (140 PPI) and text is much clearer to the point where it is mostly invisible at 18-24" viewing distance.

My laptop has spoiled my eyes. I find even a 1080p 22" monitor usable but pixelated.

Display size: 12.48" × 9.36" = 116.81in² (31.7cm × 23.77cm = 753.63cm²) at 82.05 PPI, 0.3096mm dot pitch, 6732 PPI²

And yes. The 1080 on 15.6 is 141PPI. Yes, you are going to notice a difference from 82 to 141. A HUGE difference. I never said you wouldn't. That's a 60PPI swing.

But yeah, that's a nice screen at 15.6" at 1080p. Usually those come in 1600x900 at most. You must have a pretty good laptop.
 
so far the MX279H seems to be the leader with very good low input lag, theres a newer model vx279h which adds display port, but I cant find any input lag results on it.

btw im coming from a 1200 x 1000 square lcd that's 19inc my vision isn't that great so for me the larger fonts, bigger screen the 27inch is appreciated.

I have 20/20 vision with my glasses on. Maybe that explains it.
 
I got a BENQ XL2720t (27" 1080p, 120hz, 1ms) a few months ago and have loved it so far... this was coming from a Dell Ultrasharp 24" 09 model. I must say I was very skeptical on the pixel size going from 1200p 24" to 1080p 27" but I have no issues at all with the desktop size... if anything it's easier to read! The 120hz makes a huge difference on my eyes though, and is night and day better in games. I'm running a 780gtx, but no ghosting and with high fps+120hz, everything is remarkably smooth. The only downside to this monitor is the out of box calibration... its terrible coming from an IPS monitor but after some time tweaking it's not bad... just don't expect any wonders from a TN panel of this type... it's all about the speed.

There are almost no notebooks with that resolution. Most common 15.6" 768p res is 1366 x 768. That is 100 PPI. And I found that poor for text at 18-24" viewing distances.

At 1080p 15.6" resolution and PPI windows scaling needs to be set to 125%. No visible problems; seems you need 150% to start seeing problems with text.

I have quite good vision, so maybe that's why. But I really think that 1080p is too low for a 24" desktop monitor. Atleast when it comes to text. Rounded letters doesn't look round when you can see small squares in the bends. On a 27" monitor it's even worse. There is a notable difference and 1080p on 27" is too low.

Frankly, the ability to see a little bit of a pixel, isn't a big deal. You forget about it real quick. Of course cleartype helps disguise it a bit as well. Once you are gaming, the added FPS and smoothness of 1080p at 120hz is nice.

It's all a trade off. You can't have it all.
