Neat, but all that aluminum strikes me as the wrong direction. I've heard about volume production bonded carbon fiber construction as the next wave. If they get the production down it should be way cheaper than this.

carbon fiber wheels? How much would that cost in real life? Don't typical wheels also weigh about 60-70 lbs each? that's pretty much the bulk of the weight reduction in this car if that's the case. pretty sweet though

More like 30 pounds per wheel with a tire mounted.

What they're talking about here is simply too costly to be more than a concept. Lots of carbon fiber and aluminum, and people aren't going to be willing to pay $60-80k for something like this. I applaud the notion, but it's just not going to happen any time soon.

My guess is that the next generation Fusion, if they do go this route, will be about 200 lbs lighter than the current gen (which is still great, but a far cry from what they're showing here). They'll probably throw in some aerodynamic features like the Focus has, such as whatever those special wheels are.

Where the hell are you getting your wheel weights from!?

A sedan-sized 18x7.5in wheel will run you around 20-30lbs in aluminum. A carbon wheel of that size might be 10-15lbs.

Personally, I don't want a wheel material that's known for it's 'catastrophic failure' mode. Instead of bending a wheel and losing air pressure after hitting a pot-hole, a carbon wheel would tend more towards a significant structural failure.

For a hotrod fusion I would think a 3.5 eb + AWD would be the ticket to getting tickets.
The 3200 pound Focus ST moves pretty well with the 2.0eb. The 3.5eb would be a beast in this car 🙂

damn, didnt realize how off I was. I never bothered to look at how heavy they were just going off memory during those few occasions i have to lift the tires for whatever reasons.

I dont even lift bro

17" alloys + Ventus tires = 46lbs....05 Camry with MT weighs in @ 3100lbs....500lbs less than the production Fusion.
