My current policy is going to expire a couple of weeks before my 25th birthday. I have a feeling that I won't get the magical discount when I renew, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to get around overpaying for 5.5 months. I'm thinking about canceling my policy (Geico) right after I turn 25 and then opening up a policy with Esurance to get the discount.

Anyone else go through a similar situation?

I didn't notice a dramatic drop until I turned 25 and got married a year later.

Do you have good credit?

Geico will def work with you. If I were you, I'd renew your policy, get a few quotes, then go back to Geico and tell them what rates you are getting after your bday. I called them after getting quotes from esurance and they took $125ish off my six month policy just like that.

Well I use USAA, and can have them re-evaluate my rate any day of the year. My wife and I turn 25 within days of each other this year and I'll be on the phone shortly afterwards. Both of our cars are payed off. Hers is on liability, and minese in storage since I'm deployed, so our insurance is pretty much nonexistant at the moment anyways.

When I turned 25, my company refused to re-rate me so I shopped around. Found a new company that was 45% less. I switched.

The only reason I say to renew with Geico is that they have treated me VERY exceptionally for an insurance company. I virtually guarantee that they will hook you up.

yeah, it sucks but can't blame them.
Driving in Columbus is more risky than a 3 stop light town.
I still only pay $240 a half

I'm still under my parents. All I do is put the car under my mom's name and I get to use their insurance.

but I turn 25 in 2 weeks. Maybe I'll be better if I get my own.

Get quotes online and fudge your birthdate to make yourself 25. Call the major carriers and explain your situation, if some of them offer you that price then go for it. If they offer you something still slightly more expensive, then that is your choice if you want to deal with cancelling/renewing after only 2 weeks. I would assume some of the providers would work with you on this.

My insurance dropped like $400 (almost $900 to around $500) after I turned 25...but so did a 5 year old speeding ticket, so I dunno how much each contributed to that discount.

This was with AllState, which so far had been very good to me (helped me out considerably when I my wife got rear-ended at a stoplight).

If you cancel, the insurance company has to pro-rate your policy and refund the difference, correct?

*Edit - I just redid an esurance quote and it was $120 cheaper a year if I turned 25 two days ago.

Check the laws in your state, but insurance companies can charge a fee of $50 or so for cancelling early. Here in Washington they cannot do that so yes, I just get a prorated amount refunded in a few days.

In CA, AAA uses driving experience rather than age. So me turning 25 doesnt helped me that much. I am also under my parent's policy (I bought the car under mine and father's name jointly) and the agent said that insurance will adjust automatically according to driving experience and record every year.
