Hi people!

I have 256MB Pc133 cas 2 memory in a KT7 moherboard with athlon 700 and a 30GB HD.

When I try and run DEFRAG I get a message saying not enough memory!

I know this used to work but I have not run one for a month or so, I have tried closing all progs and have also tried safe mode (BTW its WIN98 SE) and still get the same message.

Can anyone help me please?

Thanks
Knowley!

but its not that old a install.

one thing IU forgot to mention is I used a little program recently called drive upgrader. It moves hd info from drive to drive, so I used it to upgrade my 8GB HD to my new 30GB hd with out having to reinstall everything. My system is fine but maybe this has caused it?

knowley, can you provide the full error? It's possible this may just be a problem with the system.ini file.... but I need the full error to be sure

Error message as follows :

Error Defragmenting Drive C

Your computer does not have enough free memory to defragment this drive. Quit one or more programs, and then try defragmenting this drive again.

ID No: DEFRAG009 OK

(btw how do you paste picys in this forum?)

At the mo Cacheman is managing my Virtual Memory. Its set to Win98 Power User.

Thanks guys n gals avoiding a reinstall would be nice as I have my MCSE downloaded at the mo.

Cheers

I've had some problems with cacheman and certain programs before (though not defrag). Stop using it and have Windows manage the virtual memory itself.

Good luck

Defrag Error Message: ID No:DEFRAG009
If you get an error message:

Your computer does not have enough free memory to defrag the drive.
Quit one or more programs.
ID# Defrag009

or:

ScanDisk could not continue because your computer does not
have enough available memory.

See Microsoft Knowledge Base Article Q258838 for a solution.
Info is here

Nice one Taz4158!!!!!!!!!!

I used Partition Magic and had 4K clusters so I repartitioned to 16K clusters and hey presto!!!!!

Is there any (dis)advantage to having larger clusters???

Thanks a million

larger clusters - system will generally have better performance reading from HD, but more "slack space". IE - if you have a 1K file in a 8K cluster... you get 7k of slack, 15k of slack in a 16k cluster etc...

Unless you have a boatload of 1k HTM files or something, or are really short on HD space, shouldn't be a problem.
