I can't really lay any credit down, but I was discussing the card the otherday and a friend tolad me that he read something about the later versions coming with an upgrade slot for more memory. Take that for what it's worth since it's hearsay, but it might explain the phrase "up to 256mb of RAM".

Those are just the generic Radeon 9700Pro specs.

The Radeon 9700 supports up to 256MB of memory, so it is only a matter of time before some manufacturers start producing cards in this configuration. Even if it doesn't help performance it is still good for marketing purposes.

😉 Absolutely, Rad9700 can handle/address 256MB of RAM and this was always ATI's intention from inception. However 256MB is completely pointless for mainstream use at the mo, and it will be a good 12 months IMHO before it will be of any use. An extra 128MB of high spec DDR RAM will certainly push that price up though, nice for bragging rights, but like AGP8x don't go expecting any extra ooomph from it!

Seems pretty silly to me. And RAM that speed ain't cheap, so thats gonna be one expensive card, and with no real advantage for a few years.
