No, I don't think it's Spectek. When they have Spectek they refer to it as "OEM" memory, whereas they're calling this "Major Brand" memory. So it's probably manufactured by Micron, Samsung, or some other larger company with better QC. (Yes, I know that Spectek is part of Micron, but it's generally lower quality parts with poorer QC.)

And it's an excellent price... too bad I can't add any more RAM to my Tyan S2466N or ECS K7S5A!

Yes, you are right. Their OEM memory is Specteck, I didn't notice this was the major brand stuff.

Thanks CollegeGuy for posting something for the 3 of us who don't live near a Frys's or Staples.

Yes, it's somewhat disappointing to read all of the references to Frys and Staples in-store specials and have no means of taking advantage of them.

Still, General Nanosystems is a good store. It's too bad that a lot of the stuff they sell is overpriced, with the primary exception being RAM which they seem to use as a "loss leader" to get people in the store. Until recently they still wanted $99 for an ESC K7S5A, even when it had been readily available from dozens (hundreds?) on online stores for as little as $50 for many months. I don't mind paying a bit extra to get stuff locally, but there's a limit to how much more I'll pay.

That is the first time I'm heard that!

Usually I see B&M deals from outlets that are only near one or the other coast.

I agree with skriefal. Everything in the store is overpriced EXCEPT the RAM, which is often cheaper than the net.

If a good deal means 3 months of summer and 9 months of winter we have freakin' awesome deals.

BTW, Genesis computers in Bloomington (near Southtown) has some decent deals on hard to find stuff. This group builts computers and networks while also doing a little retail operation. So if General Nano doesn't have it.....

Umm...Let's just clarify that almost. All of what the sell seems to be OEM and/or generic. Example, I wouldn't call their selection of socket A HSFs spectacular (basically crappy coolermaster only).

But, in an immediate need situation, they are OK.

The few heatsinks that they carry (mentioned by Sundog) are grossly overpriced -- $20 for a heatsink that sells for $5 elsewhere. But as previously mentioned, if you "gotta have it now" then they're the best place in the area.

There are a few other local computer shops I've used. Tran Micro (few blocks from General Nanosystems) has a better selection of most things, but their prices are usually even higher than General Nanosystems and their website often doesn't work right. Que Computers is pretty much a "junk store" -- okay for picking up old keyboards and such, but not really useful for much else. And The Box Shop in St. Paul is good for old keyboards, floppy drives, network cards and such. Midwest Computers in Minneapolis is a dump -- perhaps useful if you're looking for a really old Mac, but not worth bothering with otherwise IMO. The few other stores that I've visited in the area aren't really even worth mentioning, even if I could remember their names!

I just noticed that Nanosystems did finally drop the price on the ECS K7S5A to $79. Still quite a bit higher than online, but much better than the $99 they were charging until recently -- and definitely much more in line with what I'd expect a local clone shop to charge.

General Nanosystems has some very good prices at times.
The last time I was there, I picked up a printer cable for something like $4.99

Quick little bump... it's down to $29.99 now for the first stick :). Subsequent sticks are $39.99. If only I had an open slot in my K7S5A I'd buy one!
