256mb or 512mb

how much of a performance hit would i take if i went with 256mb pc 2700 instead of 512mb pc2700 ram? i'm going to be running windows xp w/a 1600+ processor overclocked to 2100+

i ask this because if i go with the 256mb pc2700 ram i can order the parts this week and then add another 256 mb dimm in next week, or i could wait a week and get the 512mb stick. but i'd prefer to not wait.

what do you guys think?

256 is around the same price as 512. Get your stuff this week and then if it needs it spend the extra on another 256. You don't have to get 1-512 stick.

WinXP is pretty memory intensive but I don't know that you would notice a difference

I build computers for family and friends, and I wont even build a low end computer for anyone running less than 512MB and WinXP anymore. Even in everyday tasks I see a noticable performance difference between the two. Also, when I upgrade people's store-bought boxes with WinXP I always insist they add more RAM at the same time if they have less than 512MB

Just order the 256meg with everything else now so you can get up and running sooner and then just order the other 256 next week and drop it in. As mentioned you dont need to get a single 512 and in some cases two sticks is better anyways.

I say it depends on the price difference, it will probably be better going for a single 512mb stick of memory I think. It also has more upgradability that way if you ever want more ram. But you'll be better off going with 512mb whether it's 1 stick or 2.

You should definitely go with 512 MB RAM because you'll experience lower game load times and less paging during gameplay. Also your system will be more responsive, especially during heavy multitasking.

i'm almost sure i'm gonna get the 256mb of ram, because now i can order today.

i'm going to be adding another 256mb of ram next week after i get some more money so i will have 512 mb of ram in the end

If you are OCing the bus, uses as few sticks as possible. One stick is better than two. Check out some of the recent Anandtech reviews, where they tried one to three sticks. One always is the most stable. At the highest speeds, some mobos can't run with three.

I wonder when 1 gig of ram will be the standard soon.

Hmmm....so do you think one gig will be the standard soon or are you wondering when it will become the standard? Either way, I think it will be awhile before 1 gig is the standard. I would have a hard time believing 512 is the standard today. Not that I wouldn't reccomend having 512 right now, but I see little use for more right now.

CubicZirconia wondering when it will become the standard? I don't like how new OSs become more and more of a ram hog. Windiws 2000 uses 40 to 45 MB of ram on bootup and Windows XP uses 60 to 65 MB of ram on bootup. I know ram is cheap but still windows xp is more of a ram hog. I have tested this 100s of times.

And the answer is...................As soon as Bill Gates releases another OS!

I know for most of us, value is probably the main issue. If two sticks of 256MB cost less than a 512MB stick, go for it. Otherwise, you should probably stick with the 512MB, just in case you ever want to upgrade to 1GB, lol. (Assuming you only have two DDR slots)

Considering I'm just a high schooler and am strapped for cash, I always wait until memory is cheap... I mean CHEAP.

I remember about two years ago (or was it three?) I bought 512MB of good old PC100 SDRAM... in two pieces, 512MB sticks were a whole lot more expensive. I got a good deal back then, it cost about $30 a stick, and from Crucial, too. I can say this much... it sure beats running Windows XP with only 128MB of RAM!
